In general, any player whose assigned position is the left or right instead of the center. But more specifically, refers to players whose job is to come into the attack by bringing the ball up the side line(i. e., the wings) and to send good crossing passes into the center. 7, record 3, English, - wing%20player
Record number: 3, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Pure "wingers" aren’t used today as much as they used to be. "Wingers" used to be the wide forwards or midfielders (who were sometimes called "withdrawn wingers"). Wing midfielders are sometimes called "winghalfs" or "wingmids" & wing fullbacks are "wingbacks." Today, it is more common to use wingmids or wingbacks to come up to cross the ball than to have wing forwards. "Wingers" who bring the ball up the side are often very fast and excellent dribblers. 7, record 3, English, - wing%20player

The far leg... swings around in a wide sweep, with the foot hooked, toward the ball... The game of quoits is played on a ’rink’, the object being to toss a quoit(a round piece of iron with a round hole in the middle) onto an immovable hub or pin set in the ground, or failing this to get nearer to the pin than one's opponent. Measurements are taken from the central point of the hub. Two pins are used : they are set at least 18 feet apart and are surrounded by beds of clay 4 ft 6 in. in diameter; only one inch of the pin is left exposed. The quoits are thrown at one pin from a line level with the other pin, and should either lodge over the pin or dig into the clay. Each player throws two quoits. 1, record 10, English, - quoit%20rink

Both the French and Spanish make much use of the anglicism "drive", albeit not in a correct fashion: In English "drive" is supposed to imply a ball hit with a lot of pace to win a point outright, regardless of the type of spin used to accomplish this task, and regardless of which side it is hit (forehand or backhand). (The terms "shot" and "stroke", being more neutral, need not imply any added spin whatsoever.) However in both French and Spanish, "drive" is also used often as a synonym for "forehand" (shot/stroke). 3, record 11, English, - forehand

In Spanish there are at least 18 possible ways of translating the generic English term "hole". In tennis, only 2 of the terms are used. The term "agujero", used in many subject fields other than in tennis, refers more often than not to a small hole that usually goes right through an object as in the phrase "un agujero en el pantalón". "Hueco", on the other hand, usually alludes to a hole in the shape of a shaft, tunnel or more specifically in tennis, an alley or lane. Moreover phraseological units containing either of the two terms are not interchangeable. Hence the two terms are very close synonyms but not perfect synonyms. See the usage samples below. Note also that in English the term "opening" may also have different meanings: 1) an opportunity to break even or break ahead 2) a spot on the court that is not being covered by one’s opponent. 1, record 23, English, - hole
