L'hémopompe est un appareil d'assistance ventriculaire gauche qui aspire le sang du ventricule gauche et l'injecte dans l'aorte. Elle est formée d'une pompe miniature tournant à haute vitesse à l'intérieur d'une canule de silicone placée à l'apex du ventricule gauche. La pompe est connectée par un câble de commande à un moteur électromagnétique, lui-même relié à la console de contrôle. La pompe et la canule sont insérées, le plus souvent via l'artère fémorale, parfois avec l'aide d'un cathéter-guide. Le débit généré peut atteindre 3,5 1/minute. De la littérature et de notre expérience personnelle, il apparaît que l'assistance fournie par l'hémopompe permet de soutenir un ventricule gauche défaillant dans de nombreuses situations cliniques (chirurgie cardiaque, infarctus du myocarde, angioplastie à risque).
