Vitesse : dans le monde du tennis, terme polysémique qui peut avoir plusieurs traductions possibles en anglais, selon le contexte : speed, momentum, pace. Une des expressions hyperboliques et favorites des joueurs de tennis est «deux cents à l'heure», lorsque ces joueurs réussissent un coup plus rapide qu'à l'accoutumée. Une balle qui atteint péniblement le 50 km à l'heure est alors parfois considérée comme allant quatre fois plus vite.

Le terme «vélocité» est lié à la mesure du déplacement de la balle en kilomètre/heure alors que «vitesse» se qualifie en intensité : une vitesse moindre, égale ou supérieure à une vitesse antérieurement énoncée. Ainsi un coup lobé peut être difficile à frapper mais ce n'est pas en raison de la vitesse de la balle, alors qu'un «passing-shot» avec une trajectoire à l'horizontale, a une telle vitesse qu'elle devient hors d'atteinte pour l'adversaire qui joue près du filet.
