Spring and Steel Traps--The trap which in North America has, for over a century, been known as the steel trap, has in Britain been known as the gin trap. The word "gin" is presumably a corruption of engine, because all kinds of traps have been known as engines and the term is obviously appropriate when there is a spring-motivated action. Especially in the United States and Canada these traps have also been known as leg-hold traps, because it is usually around the leg that the trap jaws snap. 1, record 2, English, - steel%20trap

Record number: 2, Textual support number: 1 OBS
Record number: 2, Textual support number: 2 OBS
1, record 2, French, - pi%C3%A8ge%20%C3%A0%20ressort
Record number: 2, Textual support number: 3 OBS
3, record 2, French, - pi%C3%A8ge%20%C3%A0%20ressort

There is often a further unpleasant sequel to an animal being caught in a leg-hold trap. The ordinary version seldom closes on the higher and fleshier portion of a leg, but more usually around the foot.(...) Either by twisting the foot or by biting, the bone can be broken and the foot amputated. In this way animals often escape.(...) Jump traps are available, which spring up when an animal is taken. The jaws are released higher up on the leg and so prevent "wringing" or "wringing off" to use the terms which are employed for the amputation process. 3, record 3, English, - jump%20trap

1, record 3, French, - pi%C3%A8ge%20%5C%22sauteur%5C%22
