The region of shoreline between the limits of mean high and mean low tide levels.

Between the high and low tide marks lies a strip of shoreline that is regularly covered and uncovered by the advance and retreat of the tides. This meeting ground between land and sea is called the "intertidal."

To many geomorphologists, the term "foreshore" is considered synonymous with the intertidal zone. These definitions are compared with the legal definitions of the "foreshore" as exist in Britain under the three different property law regimes; English, Scottish and Udal law. The legal definitions and many of the geomorphological definitions are based on tidal data. The differences between the observed tides at a tide gauge and on a beach at a distance from the gauge are considered. It is concluded that the term "foreshore" has a very specific legal meaning in each property law regime, therefore the authors propose that the term "foreshore" should be used to relate to the legally defined area of the coast and, unless specifically referring to the foreshore, scientists should use the term "intertidal. "

The term "peaceful uses of outer space" appears in official government statements and multilateral treaties. However, the examination of the state practice leads to the conclusion that this term is still without an authoritative definition. It is a source of considerable confusion and creates a legal grey area. The widely accepted interpretation of this key term of space law prior to the begin of space age, namely that "peaceful" means "non-military, "was soon contradicted by the practice of two space powers. In the period between 1957 and the adoption of the Outer Space Treaty in 1967, these two powers had placed into orbit a number of military payloads and had come increasingly dependent on space technology in their military planning. Since the term "peaceful" continues to be used, it is useful to examine the meaning of this ambiguous adjective.

In a zone where the permitted FAR is a maximum of 1.0, a 40,000 sq foot lot (approximately an acre) could have 40,000 sq ft building. Staying within the Far limit, a developer might build a 4-story building at 10,000 sq ft per floor, or a 2-story building at 20,000 sq ft per floor. Height rules permitting, it could also be a 10-story building at 4,000 sq feet per floor. If the FAR is 4.0 (the greatest FAR currently permitted in Cambridge), the same lot could have a 160,000 sq ft building. Parking areas, cellar space, floor space in open balconies, elevator or stair-bulkheads, and other non-habitable space within the building do count as part of the FAR.

In France, the central government sets a national Floor Area Ratio limit of 1, and 1. 5 in the Paris region(the Plafond Légal de Densité). Regardless of what density is permitted in a local POS or ZAC, developers who wish to build above the nationally permitted FAR must purchase the rights to do so from the municipality. This system is technically a form of betterment recoupment, since it applies to land whose value has been raised primarily because of planning and zoning allowances.
