Le cadastre légal a pour objectifs l'identification du propriétaire d'une parcelle et la détermination des droits qu'il peut faire valoir sur cette parcelle. Il suppose donc que le statut juridique, l'état et les limites exactes de la parcelle soient clairement établis ainsi que les droits et servitudes afférents. La mise en place d'un cadastre à finalité légale exige une plus grande rigueur que celle d'un cadastre à but strictement fiscal.

Le cadastre juridique [...] fournit la preuve de la propriété et des droits acquis sur celle-ci. On le retrouve dans les pays germaniques et la Suisse. En France, en raison de l'annexion par l'Allemagne de l'Alsace et de la Moselle de 1871 à 1918, les trois départements du Bas-Rhin, du Haut-Rhin et de la Moselle disposent d'un cadastre juridique en liaison avec le livre foncier, disposition maintenue dans son droit local.

The Saskatchewan Land Surveyor's Association, duly incorporated in 1910, is an organization of professional land surveyors who are registered to practice in accordance with the provisions of the Saskatchewan Land Surveyors’ Act, Chapters S27, of the revised statutes of Saskatchewan. As a self-governing professional organization, our Association has been entrusted with the stewardship and standards of the legal survey profession with responsibility for establishment, re-establishment and maintenance of survey monuments defining the Provincial Cadastre which serves as a basis for the Torrens Land Registration System in the province providing the foundation for land tenureship and virtually all development of land.
