CONT

Air quality standards are legal limits placed on levels of air pollutants in the ambient(outdoor) air during a given period of time. As such, they characterize the allowable level of a pollutant or a class of pollutants in the atmosphere and thus define the amount of exposure permitted to the population and/or to ecological systems.

OBS

The term "ambient air quality standard" is often used with the meaning of "national ambient air quality standard".

DEF

A maximum limit of exposure to an air contaminant.

OBS

The following contexts show that depending on the situation, an "exposure limit" does not always refer to a concentration.

CONT

... a guide for the evaluation of human exposure to whole-body vibration ... provides ... limits ... for the preservation of health or safety - so-called exposure limits - which should not be exceeded ...

CONT

An exposure limit is the concentration of a chemical in the workplace air to which most people can be exposed without experiencing harmful effects.

OBS

Exposure limits have different names and different meanings depending on who developed them and whether or not they are legal limits. For example, Threshold Limit Values(TLVs) are exposure guidelines developed by the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists(ACGIH). They have been adopted by several Canadian governments as their legal limits. Permissible Exposure Limits(PELs) are legal exposure limits in the United States.

OBS

There are three different types of exposure limits in common use: - Time-weighted average (TWA) exposure limit .... - Short-term exposure limit (STEL) .... - Ceiling (C) exposure limit ....
