Although the terms "members of visible minorities" and "visible minorities" are used in legal and statistical contexts in Canada, they are considered outdated and can be inaccurate in a general context as they do not always reflect provincial, territorial or other regional demographic compositions in Canada. Also, the word "visible" suggests that being white is the standard and the word "minority" limits the concept to numbers, when it is in fact more often about the power that is held by a dominant group. 2, record 3, English, - members%20of%20visible%20minorities

4, record 3, French, - minorit%C3%A9s%20visibles

In International Law, equity may be considered a secondary source, and by Article 38(2) of the Statute of the International Court of Justice, referring to Article 38(1), «This provision shall not prejudice the power of the court to decide a case ex aequo et bono, if the parties agree thereto». Though the Court has thus not been expressly authorized to apply equity as distinguished from law, Article 38(1) c) expressly directs the application of «general principles of law recognized by civilized nations»... and in several States, as noted above, principles of equity have an established place in their municipal legal systems. No doubt the international judge can decide according to principles of equity in absence of rules of positive law, but it is doubtful whether he can decide «contra legem», i. e. contrary to such rules when they exist. 1, record 7, English, - equity

1, record 7, French, - %C3%A9quit%C3%A9

The language employed by the members of the court in this case is the language of estoppel. The judges all refer to the principal' s holding out the agent, of apparent authority to contract as he did, of making him an ostensible principal. It is suggested, however, that another way of looking at this case is by saying that once a man is put into a position of manager of a business which normally or usually carries with it the power to transact certain kinds of legal acts, then such a manager has authority to do whatever is so normal or usual. 1, record 13, English, - ostensible%20principal

The term "domestic jurisdiction", as used in the theory and practice of international law, mainly since the Covenant of the League of Nations, is not a new legal concept from the point of view of its content. Indeed, it does not mean anything else or anything more than the term sovereignty in the sense of the supreme power of the State over its territory and inhabitants in the framework of international law binding upon the State. What some authors used to call "internal sovereignty" corresponds to domestic jurisdiction. This term does not mean exactly the same thing as the French expression "compétence exclusive de l'État, "although it is translated in this way in the Covenant. 3, record 23, English, - domestic%20jurisdiction

In a practical sense, sovereignty is also largely a matter of degree. Some States enjoy more power and independence than other States. This leads to the familiar distinction between independent or sovereign States, and non-independent or non-sovereign States or entities, for example, Protectorates and colonies. Even here it is difficult to draw the line, for although a State may have accepted important restrictions on its liberty of action, on other respects it may enjoy the widest possible freedom. "Sovereignty" is therefore a term of art rather than a legal expression capable of precise definition. 5, record 33, English, - sovereign%20state

3, record 34, French, - corporation
