The numbers of the range roads help to establish the location of the roads as they exist with relation to the legal land description survey system. Subject to the direction of the Minister of Natural Resources, the Surveyor General of Canada Lands has responsibility for the management of surveys on Canada Lands. This mandate drives two programs : Canada's Survey Registry, which provides the standards for surveys, registration processes and the archive for legal survey documents; and Canada's Survey Program, which delivers the legal surveys in support of Government of Canada priorities such as those for Aboriginal Lands.

Appeals Renewal Initiative(ARI) : In response to a national survey undertaken to determine client satisfaction with the appeals system, the Department examined ways to improve the dispute resolution process. Several initiatives to be implemented include accelerating the average time to process an objection; developing Service Standards; surveying to measure client satisfaction regarding fairness, impartiality, clarity of communications and overall quality. In addition, the ARI commits Appeals officers to make available to clients all documents relevant to a disputed assessment; it also facilitates Appeals officers’ access to legal advice.

As a self-governing professional organization, our Association has been entrusted with the stewardship and standards of the legal survey profession with responsibility for establishment, re-establishment and maintenance of survey monuments defining the Provincial Cadastre which serves as a basis for the Torrens Land Registration System in the province providing the foundation for land tenureship and virtually all development of land.
