In China, from ancient times to the present, from official government business to private affairs, no matter how important or trivial, your chop affixes your credit and your promise. After signing your name, your chop is still required for a document to be legally binding. Name chops are used by Chinese calligraphers and painters. Artists follow the custom of stamping their works with the name chops to "sign" them and as proof of authenticity. Name chops are engraved by hand. It combines the beauty of written characters and line drawings. The most common materials for making chops are copper for the general population, and jade, for the emperor and nobility. 1, record 11, English, - chop%20engraving

An indication of willingness to do or refrain from doing something that is capable of being converted by acceptance into a legally binding contract. It is made by an offeror to an offeree and is capable of acceptance only by an offeree who knows of its existence. In English law, a promise is not, as a general rule, binding as a contract unless it is either made under seal or supported by some "consideration". The purpose of the doctrine of consideration is to put some legal limit on the enforceability of agreements even where they are intended to be legally binding and are not vitiated by some factor such as mistake, misrepresentation, duress or illegality.... The present position therefore is that English law limits the enforceability of agreements not under seal by reference to a complex and multifarious body of rules known as "the doctrine of consideration. Between 1972 and 1977 several studies confirmed the hypothesis that air pollutants could travel several thousands of kilometres before deposition and damage occurred. This also implied that cooperation at the international level was necessary to solve problems such as acidification. In response to these acute problems, a High-level Meeting within the Framework of the ECE on the Protection of the Environment was held at ministerial level in November 1979 in Geneva. It resulted in the signature of the Convention on Long-range Transboundary Air Pollution by 34 Governments and the European Community(EC). The Convention was the first international legally binding instrument to deal with problems of air pollution on a broad regional basis. Besides laying down the general principles of international cooperation for air pollution abatement, the Convention sets up an institutional framework bringing together research and policy. The Convention on Long-range Transboundary Air Pollution entered into force in 1983. It has been extended by eight specific protocols. 2, record 29, English, - Convention%20on%20Long%2Drange%20Transboundary%20Air%20Pollution

1, record 39, French, - Initiative%20Costa%20Rica%2DCanada

In order to speak of a "treaty" in the generic sense, an instrument has to meet various criteria. First of all, it has to be a binding instrument, which means that the contracting parties intended to create legal rights and duties.
