The literal meaning of a legatee is one who receives a legacy. Specifically, in the law of wills and property, a legatee is an individual who receives a portion of a testator's estate, or rather the individual receives a legacy, which is personal property from a will. Although this term legatee is generally used to refer to individuals who inherit from a will regardless of whether it was real property or personal property, an individual who inherits real property from a will is known as a devisee. 3, record 2, English, - legatee

A legacy payable at a future time, certain to arrive, and not subject to conditions precedent, is vested, where there is a person "in esse" at the testator's death capable of taking when the time arrives, though his interest may be altogether defeated by his own death.... Thus a legacy to one to be paid when he attains the age of twenty-one years is a vested legacy, because it is given unconditionally and absolutely, and therefore vests an immediate interest in the legatee, of which the enjoyment only is deferred or postponed.(Black's, 5th ed., 1979, p. 1402) 1, record 7, English, - vested%20legacy

Additional and substituted legacies. It not infrequently occurs that more than one legacy is given to a legatee, either in the same or in different testamentary instruments. In such cases the question may arise whether the legacy last given is to be in addition to or in substitution for the previous legacies. A need for a "caeterorum" grant may arise, for example, when the assignee of part of the deceased's estate has obtained a grant limited to the property he claims, or a legatee has obtained a grant limited to the amount of his legacy, or a trustee or "cestui que trust" has obtained administration limited to the property of which the deceased was trustee. In all such cases those entitled to a general grant, whether on intestacy or with the will annexed, may take administration of the rest of the deceased's estate.(Hull & Cullity, Macdonell, Sheard and Hull on Probate Practice, 3rd ed., 1981, p. 268) 1, record 28, English, - caeterorum%20grant

Where a testator makes two distinct bequests in the same will to the same person, one of which happens to be onerous and the other beneficial, prima facie the legatee is entitled to disclaim the onerous legacy and to take the other.(Williams, Mortimer and Sunnucks, p. 878) 1, record 32, English, - beneficial%20legacy
