The concept of pay equity refers to legislated programs that aim to achieve equity in pay in a predictable and organized fashion. Pay equity laws are pro-active in that they do not rely on a complaint being filed in order to engage. These laws provide specific targets and deadlines, and use the collective bargaining process to get the parties to agree on a job evaluation system and on pay adjustments. Pay equity is designed to bring about equal pay for work of equal value. Pay equity initiatives do not concern themselves with the fact that women and men tend to work in different occupations. Instead, pay equity focuses on eliminating compensation inequities that exist for female jobs relative to their male counterpart jobs of equal value. Pay equity is about people staying in the same job but being valued appropriately according to the organization’s compensation patterns for male jobs.
