[...] Lénard avait constaté que le faisceau de rayons cathodiques pouvait exciter une substance fluorescente au point d'impact avec le verre et que, contrairement à la lumière, il était capable de traverser un mince hublot métallique placé sur la paroi du tube. Lénard avait ainsi perfectionné le tube afin d'étudier les rayons cathodiques en eux-mêmes.
