Internal deceleration normally is achieved with built-in cushions; the length of the cushion sets the fraction of the stroke in which cylinder speed can be controlled. Cushions can be, and usually are, built into both the cap and head ends of a cylinder. A cushioned cylinder... consists of a spear(on either or both sides of the piston), a mating cavity in the appropriate cylinder end to receive the spear, a needle valve to adjust cushioning speed and a check valve for quick start-up when the cylinder reverses its direction of travel and moves away from the cushion.
