Chip away any fractured ice using your ice axe, then turn the ice screw handle the remainder of the way. Align the hanger so that it hangs downward—in the direction of pull.... Muscle contractions which result in movement are known as isotonic contractions. There are two types of isotonic muscle contraction : concentric and eccentric... Eccentric contractions are the opposite of concentric contractions. The muscle contracts but increases in length. This type of contraction occurs usually in the direction of gravity, to control a movement. For example, using the same biceps curl exercise-as the arm is slowly straightened from the bent position, the Biceps Brachii muscle contracts eccentrically to control the downward movement and increase the angle at the joint. 2, record 18, English, - eccentric%20contraction

The point of beginning is not more controlling than other designated points of a grant and should be selected primarily because of its certainty of identity and facility of location.... Unfortunately, there is a decided tendency in the description of city lots to rely entirely upon the point of beginning for location, and the remaining calls merely give the length and possibly, but not always, the direction of the courses. This practice makes the point of beginning of particular importance, and it is not uncommon to find that a survey is impossible because of the uncertainty of the beginning point.(Skelton, p. 46) 1, record 24, English, - beginning%20point

Ice meter... Objective methods of the icing measurements are based on the icing weight determination related to the unit of area(in meteorology) or to the unit of length(in power supply). The hard rime was determined with the aid of the so-called icing meter bars. They were represented by two wooden bars of 32 mm diameter and 1 m length, i. e. the surface area equals 0, 1 m² per 1 bar. Bars were placed horizontally and perpendicularly to each other. First of them was oriented in north-south direction, the second east-west. The amount of water was measured and result recalculated to kg. m-². The Roof Coatings Manufacturers Association(RCMA) recommends certain procedures for the application of asphalt aluminum roof coatings... When roll or brush-applying an asphalt aluminum, it is important to finish the strokes in basically the same direction to achieve the best aesthetics. If aluminum flakes orient in the same direction, they reflect light more uniformly. Spray equipment is typically an airless sprayer, however any spray unit capable of spraying the coating in an even pattern can be used. Consult the coating or spray equipment manufacturer for proper selection, as the viscosity of the material, the hose internal diameter size, and length of hose all help determine the type of spray equipment needed for the job. 2, record 29, English, - spray%20equipment

The disk-type centrifuge consists of a stack of thin disks in the shape of cones. The sedimentation takes place in the radial direction in the space between adjacent cones.... Feed enters at the center line of the rotating bowl and is accelerated by fins or channels at the bottom of the disk stack assembly before it is introduced into the bowl proper.... The heavy liquid separates quickly and settles to the bowl wall. Light liquid with some of the heavy liquid entrained as small drops enters the outside of the disk stack and flows up the sloped surfaces to the central portion of the disks. The entrained drops of heavy liquor are separated in the shallow layers between the disks and settle back to the bowl wall. Any solids contained in the feed are also settled to the bowl wall.... The bowl used with these machines contains a central stack of coned discs which ensure an almost constant length of flowpath, and the deposition of solids at the bowl wall produces only a minor reduction in the flowpath. 2, record 45, English, - disk%20type%20centrifuge

The clamshell door type thrust reverser provides reversal of thrust by blocking the engine exhaust gas and fan air flow and deflecting the gasses through openings made by repositioned defector doors or by fixed cascade vane openings depending on the type of reverser mechanism. Exhaust gases of the centre engine are deflected forward and out of the sides of the aft fuselage, and on strut mounted engines gases are deflected above and below the engine in a forward direction. 2, record 54, English, - reverse%20thrust%20system

Using an avalanche cord is the oldest form of equipment-mainly used before beacons became available. The principle is simple. An approximately 10-meter long red cord(similar to parachute cord) is attached to the person in question's belt. While skiing, snowboarding, or walking the cord is dragged along behind the person. If the person gets buried in an avalanche, the light cord stays on top of the snow. Due to the color the cord is easily visible for rescue personnel. Typically the cord has iron markings every one meter that indicate the direction and length to the victim. 3, record 57, English, - avalanche%20cord

2, record 57, French, - cordelette%20d%27avalanche

The above photo shows a halo phenomenon known as the upper tangent arc. When cirrus clouds contain columnar ice crystals aligned so that their axes are all in a horizontal direction, this type of arc may be produced. A characteristic of this arc-shaped patch of light is that it's directly above the Sun(it bends upward away from the Sun), and it's approximately 22 degrees away from the Sun itself-about 2 fists held at arms length. 1, record 68, English, - upper%20tangent%20arc
Record number: 68, Textual support number: 2 CONT
The 22° halo is most common, but other halo forms are sometimes seen. The tangent arcs to the 22° halo can appear if the sun’s declination is less than 32°. One is called the lower tangent arc to the 22° halo, and the other is the upper tangent arc to the 22° halo. The shape of these tangent haloes depends upon the sun’s declination. If the sun is close to the horizon, the two upper arcs angle sharply away from the 22° halo. As the sun rises higher in the sky, the tangent arcs move toward the 22° halo. When the sun’s declination reaches 32°above the horizon, the lower and upper tangent arcs make contact, and the resulting ring is called the circumscribed halo. It touches the 22° halo above and beneath the sun. When the sun is just above 32°the circumscribed halo resembles a double oval. As the sun rises higher it becomes increasingly circular and draws nearer to the 22° halo. When the sun’s declination exceeds 70°, the circumscribed arc nearly coincides with the 22° halo. 2, record 68, English, - upper%20tangent%20arc

Shake, Rattle & Roll Poster. Shake :... The International Space Station undergoes oscillations. If it is given a slight push, such as a bump from the Shuttle while undergoing a docking procedure, the ISS [International Space Station] vibrates with a to-and-fro shaking motion. Student Activity : Docking the Shuttle to an oscillating Space Station is a bit like trying to toss a ball into a swaying bucket from a distance. The trajectory of the ball must be perfect(the launch speed, angle and direction) and synchronized exactly with the motion of the oscillating bucket. Try it. Student Challenge : Clamp one end of a 30 cm steel ruler to the edge of a table so that it sticks straight out. Bend the free end of the ruler downward a few centimetres and release it. Observe what happens. Attach a heavy mass(approximately 200 grams), such as a large blob of putty or Plasticine, to the free end of the ruler. Again, depress the free end of the ruler a few centimetres and release it. Observe what happens. Try doubling the mass or changing the length of the free part of the ruler. Observe what happens to the motion of the ruler as the mass or length changes. Design an experiment to quantitatively measure the effect you have observed. Relate your findings to the oscillating behaviour of the International Space Station as it grows in mass and length. 1, record 70, English, - shake

Warp and weft yarns lie to a certain extent in a wavy form in a fabric. There is, therefore, a difference in length between straightened yarns and the yarns in the wavy form in the fabric, both in warp and weft direction. In order to be able to produce the fabric required, information is needed for predicting the length, width and mass per unit area of the fabric. This difference in length between the yarn and the fabric is usually referred to as crimp, a parameter which is significant for the structure of the fabric and also for the pore shape and size. When the fabric is loaded there is often a change in the ratio of the crimp of the warp and weft system. This change is referred to as crimp interchange. Crimp affects the mechanical properties of the fabric. 1, record 71, English, - crimp%20interchange

2, record 77, English, - crimp%20of%20yarn%20in%20fabric

Waves are formed due to the friction of the wind over the water surface. The three main components for wave generation are the wind speed, it’s duration and fetch. ... How to recognise a swell/wave generating area. On a weather chart there are high and low pressure systems. They are separated by isobars (lines joining places of equal pressure). Buys Ballot’s law states: "If you stand with your back to the wind in the northern hemisphere, the low pressure will be on your left." From this you can deduce the wind flows anticlockwise around a low pressure system and almost parallel to the isobars. The wind near the surface actually flows at an angle of about 15 degrees to the isobars pointing in to the low. The reason for this is that friction with the surface slows the air down and it is this friction which causes waves to form. Assuming you have identified an area of closely packed isobars which are almost straight for 200 miles and the low system is not changing to quickly, you have found a good swell generating area. 3, record 78, English, - wave%20generation%20area

3, record 80, French, - cheminement%20al%C3%A9atoire
