Dosimeters. The OSHA [Occupational Safety and Health Act] law requires characterization of varying noise environments by a single number criteria. The environment may be that experienced by a mobile employee whose work takes him into many different factory areas, or it may be a fixed work area where intermittent machine operations produce unpredictable variations in noise level. OSHA specifies a maximum daily noise dose (D) of unity: ... where C is the total exposure at a given steady dBA level and T is the maximum allowable exposure time at that level during a 8-hour work day. ... Noise dose can be predicted for mobile workers by studying their movements and estimating the total time they are exposed to each different dBA level they experience.

[A standard] testing method measuring flame spread, fuel contribution and smoke density of materials under controlled conditions.

The test equipment consists of a horizontal tunnel 7. 6 m long, 450 mm wide, and 300 mm deep... The roof is removable and lined with a low density material of mineral composition. The walls and floor are constructed of refractory fire brick. One wall has observation windows along its length. Flames from two burners at one end are forced down the tunnel by a steady draught of air at 1. 2 m/s. These burner flames are about 1. 37 m long, release heat at a steady rate of about 90 kW, and impinge directly on the test specimen, which is mounted either on the floor or on the ceiling of the tunnel. This exposure is similar in intensity to what occurs when a small piece of furniture leaning against a wall is set on fire. The tunnel is calibrated by adjusting the rate of heat release of the burners so that it takes about five and a half minutes for flames to reach the exhaust end of the tunnel when the specimen is 18 mm select-grade red oak. In the exhaust duct at the end of the tunnel are a light source and detector for measuring smoke and a thermocouple for determining heat released.

Dans le conduit d'évacuation à l'extrémité du tunnel se trouvent une source lumineuse et un détecteur pour mesurer la fumée, ainsi qu'un thermocouple pour déterminer la chaleur dégagée.

Photoperiodism is the use of the change in day and night length to time certain physiological and behavioural functions. I am interested in how temperate birds use the change in day length to time reproduction. Most birds do not have their gonads all year round. They regenerate their sexual organs to coincide with the breeding season. Day and night length is not the only environmental cue that they can use to help them time reproduction correctly. For example some birds use temperature and rainfall.

Long-term exposure is the last classification of exposure in industrial toxicology. This exposure is not typically found in the industrial environment but is used extensively in laboratory applications. Even with novel work hours, workers rarely exceed 16 hours on the job. Therefore, long-term exposure is not as valuable in the industrial environment as it has been in laboratory testing. Long-term generally relates to exposures of greater than one year in length and is usually used in carcinogen testing of animals.

Administrative controls can limit an employee’s exposure to a hazard by reducing the time of potential exposure. Administrative controls are usually implemented when exposures cannot be controlled through engineering procedures, or where controls at the source are impractical.
