Record number: 4, Textual support number: 1 CONT
A bat is made of one piece of solid wood or from a block of wood consisting of two or more pieces bonded together in such a way that the grain direction is parallel to the length of the bat. It can be as long as 42 inches [though 36 or 37 inches is rarely exceeded for a baseball bat, and as long as 34 inches for a softball bat] and must not exceed a diameter of 2 3/4 inches [2 1/4 inches for a softball bat] at its thickest part. Tape or another sticky substance may be applied to the handle to permit a better grip, but should not be higher than 18 inches [10 to 15 inches for a softball bat] up the handle. 4, record 4, English, - bat
Record number: 4, Textual support number: 1 OBS
Bat nicknames have survived long usage, some of the more enduring being "lumber," "wood," "wand," "willow," "war club," "stick," "shillelagh." A bat is still called the "hickory" because it used to be made of the hardwood, although white ash has long since proved more satisfactory. The [term] "white tongue" as a synonym dates to the 1880s when A.G. Spalding advertised for 100,000 wagon tongues to be turned into bats. 5, record 4, English, - bat

Record number: 7, Textual support number: 1 DEF
The Aztec word for a spear throwing stick device. 4, record 7, English, - atlatl
Record number: 7, Textual support number: 1 OBS
This projectile propulsion device preceded the bow and arrow. In general, a wooden or bone stick or board with a hand grip at one end and a spur or hook at the other end. The atlatl is used as an extension of the arm in throwing a spear or dart. The spear shaft is socketed and fits into the spur or hook of the Atlatl. Essentially the Atlatl lengthens the length of the spear thrower's arm and with loaded, spring-like, motion can provide the benefit of greater force and distance over that of the hand thrown spear. It is hypothesized that sometimes a stone weight(s)(a. k. a. : Bannerstone, Birdstone, Boatstone) was attached to the Atlatl to provide better balance or to load the device with a spring or bending effect or to diminish the "whoosh" noise created during the throwing process. 4, record 7, English, - atlatl

1, record 8, French, - scie%20de%20parqueteur
