This very active swimmer has a powerful streamlined body that reaches a maximum length of approximately 3 m. The back of the porbeagle shark is dark grey to bluish black in colour and its belly is white. The head is stout, the snout is pointed and the eyes are large. The mouth has rather large, pointed blade-like teeth with smooth edges that are identical on both jaws. Males reach maturity at age 8 and females at age 13. The porbeagle shark's typical life expectancy is estimated to be between 25 and 46 years.

A peculiar bivalve that starts life as a free-swimming scallop, but later on settles upon some object and becomes sessile. Attached by the lower valve, [it] soon grows into an irregular, oblong shape. Length may be anywhere from 3 to 10 in. Shell attains considerable thickness, and is sculptured with numerous and crowded wrinkled lines. Color [is] reddish to grayish white, but as the shell increases in size it becomes coarse and the colors tend to fade. Interior [is] white, stained with rich purple near the hinge.

Le pétoncle des roches est un gros coquillage massif dont la coquille peut atteindre une hauteur de 250 mm (de la charnière au bord de la valve supérieure). La forme des valves est très irrégulière, et la surface extérieure est creusée de grosses côtes rayonnantes, de couleur brun, gris et vert. This insect, common in Great-Britain and Canada’s West Coast, is an omnivorous scavenger of cereal screenings, dust, etc. Occasionally it is a major pest of bulk wheat, bagged flour and a variety of stored commodities. In the home it is much more important as a clothes moth than as a pest of stored foods.

OBS

The adults vary in size with the male having a wing-spread of about 2 centimetres, while the female may at times exceed 2. 5 centimetres. The forewings are dark brown with a number of blackish-brown spots. Approximately 300 eggs are laid by each female, most of them within a few days of mating. Three times as many eggs are laid on sacking as on grain. The mature larva is about 2 centimetres in length, shiny white in colour, with a yellow head. The feeding larva spins a light, closely-woven tube of silk as it eats its way through a food mass. When temperatures are too low, many of the larvae become dormant rather than pupate, extending the larval stage. High relative humidity is a requirement for satisfactory larval growth. At summer temperatures and a relative humidity of approximately 90% the life cycle takes about 100 days.

La taille de l'adulte varie. Chez le mâle, les ailes ont une envergure d'environ 2 cm tandis que, chez la femelle, l'envergure dépasse parfois 2,5 cm. Les ailes antérieures sont brun foncé et parsemées de taches brun noirâtre. La femelle pond à peu près trois cents œufs, quelques jours après l'accouplement dans la plupart des cas. Elle dépose trois fois plus d'œufs sur les sacs que sur le grain. Au terme de son développement, la larve, d'un blanc brillant et présentant une tête jaune, mesure environ 2 cm de longueur. Elle tisse un fourreau de soie, léger mais serré, à mesure qu'elle creuse son chemin dans la masse des grains pour se nourrir. Lorsque les températures sont trop basses, de nombreuses chenilles connaissent une diapause au lieu de se chrysalider, prolongeant ainsi l'évolution nymphale. La chenille a besoin de conditions d'humidité relative élevée pour se développer de façon satisfaisante. À des températures estivales et à une humidité relative d'environ 90%, le cycle évolutif exige environ cent jours.

Cadelle feed on many food materials: cereal grain and its products, oilseeds, cacao, spices, etc. Their presence is indicative of old, rotten grain around storage areas and poor sanitary conditions.

Cadelles are one of the largest insects to infest grain. They are shiny black in colour, about 8 to 9 millimetres in length, and easily recognized by their large mandibles with which they can gnaw through sacking and even wood. The larva is also easy to recognize, with its black head and two black prongs on the last segment. The larva also has dark spots on top of the dorsal section. The cadelle has one of the longest life cycles of the beetles. The females lay about 900 eggs. At 28 degrees C and a relative humidity of 70 to 80%, it takes about 80 days from egg to adult. When the average temperature drops to 23 degrees C, the larval stage lasts 13 months. Under colder conditions the life cycle may take three years.

La cadelle est un des plus gros insectes à infester le grain. De couleur noirjais, brillant, l'adulte mesure de 8 à 9 mm de longueur. On le reconnaît facilement à ses puissantes mandibules qui lui permettent de ronger la toile à sac et même le bois. La larve est également facilement identifiable, du fait de sa tête noire, des deux urogomphes qui terminent son dernier segment abdominal et des taches foncées sur la surface dorsale de son thorax. Le cycle évolutif de la cadelle est parmi les plus longs, chez les coléoptères. La femelle pond environ neuf cents œufs. À 28 degrés C et à une humidité relative variant entre 70 % et 80 %, l'évolution de la cadelle demande environ quatre-vingt jours. Si la température est de 23 degrés C, l'insecte passera treize mois sous la forme larvaire, et, à des températures plus basses, l'évolution peut exiger trois ans.

This moth, common in Great Britain and Canada’s West Coast, is often found in combination with the brown house moth. It is usually considered to be more of a stored product pest and less of a scavenger than the latter. The worst infestations occur in grain, cereals, and stored seeds such as peas and beans.

The adult is easily recognized by its conspicuous white head and thorax. The forewings are greyish-white with darker areas. The males have a wing-spread of about 1. 2 centimetres and the females about 2 centimetres. Most of the adults are females, each of which lays about 100 eggs. Like the brown house moth, the females vary in size and the larger females lay more eggs. The eggs, dull white in colour, are laid in cracks and crevices and often adhere together. The larva, which requires a relative humidity of at least 80% for development, is about 1. 2 centimetres in length and waxy-white in colour. The head and adjoining portion of the back of the adult are reddish-brown. This moth has no dormant stage and under summer conditions and 90% relative humidity, the life of this species takes about 62 days.

On reconnaît facilement l'adulte à sa tête et à son thorax de couleur blanche qui attirent la vue. Les ailes antérieures sont d'un blanc grisâtre, avec des zones plus foncées. Chez le mâle, l'envergure des ailes est de 1,2 cm environ et, chez la femelle, d'environ 2 cm. La plus grande partie de la population adulte est composée de femelles qui pondent, chacune, environ cent œufs. Comme pour l'œcophore bronzée, la taille des femelles varie, et les plus grosses pondent plus d'œufs. Les œufs, d'un blanc terne, sont déposés dans des fissures ou des anfractuosités et, souvent, ils adhèrent les uns aux autres. La chenille, qui a besoin d'une humidité relative de 80 % pour se développer, mesure environ 1,2 cm de longueur et est d'un blanc cireux. La tête et la partie attenante du dos de l'adulte sont brun roux. Ce papillon ne présente pas de diapause et, à des températures estivales et à une humidité relative de 90 %, le cycle évolutif exige environ soixante-deux jours.

Grevy's Zebra is now restricted to Ethiopia and Kenya. Most surviving in Ethiopia are in the north-east of Lake Turkana; the Alledeghi plains; the Yabello Sanctuary and around Lake Chew Bahar. In Kenya, Grevy's Zebra occurs in much of its former range : east of the Rift Valley and Lake Turkana, north of Mount Kenya and the Tana River, and east towards western Somalia.... Head and body length 250 to 300 cm. Tail length 38 to 60 cm. WEIGHT 352 to 450 kg. Average life expectancy. Captives have lived up to 22 years(Nowak, 1991). Normal diet. Principally grazers, though browsing may comprise 30 per cent of their diet.
