A reed or blade of other material that serves as the sounding apparatus of certain wind instruments.

CONT

The single reed for the clarinet is made from a slip cut from the stem of "A. donax. "After being trimmed, the reed is flattened on the inner side, while the end of the rounded outer side is scraped down to a feather edge. The thick end of the reed is attached, flat side down, to the mouthpiece by a metal ligature or length of twine. In playing, the thin end of the reed vibrates, alternately closing and opening the space between the reed and the mouthpiece. The vibration carries through the wedged-shaped tone chamber in the mouthpiece and into the air column in the tube.

Flat apple disease is caused by Cherry rasp leaf virus(CRLV). This virus is transmitted by dagger nematodes, Xiphinema americanum. The virus is believed to have originated in native vegetation and can move between cherry and apple plantings... Fat apple symptoms are most severe on ’Red Delicious’ and related cultivars. The length of the fruit is significantly reduced and the stem cavity becomes very shallow.

Whenever the celery crop has been weakened in any manner, such as by the lack of magnesium, boron or other minor element; too much soluble salt; excessively wet soil; not enough fertilizer; too acid soil; and other influences, this weak pathogen causes spotting on celery stems. The brown or tan spot is irregular in shape, shallow in depth, and is present either on the outside or inside of the stem, on the petioles, and slightly on the leaflets....
