DEF

Particle of aggregate for which the ratio of the length to width of its circumscribing rectangular prism is greater than a specified value.

French

Domaine(s)

CONT

DEF

... the ratio into which a line segment must be divided so that the entire length is to the long part as the long part is to the short. The value of the ratio is about 1.618.

CONT

From [the golden section] can be derived the golden number ... 1.618, which was widely claimed in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries to be the key to the beautiful proportions of Greek and other classical architecture.

CONT

Many artists believe that of all rectangles, the one whose length and width make a golden ratio has the most pleasing dimensions; hence the prominence of the golden ratio in architecture, exemplified by the Parthenon.

DEF

DEF

nombre réel irrationnel [...] définissant la proportion dorée.

OBS

nombre d'or : [...]

English

Subject field(s)
  • Gemmology
  • Diamond Industry
DEF

The comparison of the length and width of the girdle outline on marquise, emerald, pear-shape, and oval cuts, determined by dividing the length by the width.

CONT

Describe a typical polishing sequence for a princess shape :... f) brillianteer the diamond : create the stars : shape of the stars varies depending on the diamond's length-to-width ratio, crown height and table size...

OBS

The width is expressed as 1. Some length-to-width ratios are considered more pleasing than others; these include: marquise, 1.75-2.25:1; oval, 1.33-1.66:1; emerald cut and pear shape, 1.50-1.75:1.

CONT

Warp and weft yarns lie to a certain extent in a wavy form in a fabric. There is, therefore, a difference in length between straightened yarns and the yarns in the wavy form in the fabric, both in warp and weft direction. In order to be able to produce the fabric required, information is needed for predicting the length, width and mass per unit area of the fabric. This difference in length between the yarn and the fabric is usually referred to as crimp, a parameter which is significant for the structure of the fabric and also for the pore shape and size. When the fabric is loaded there is often a change in the ratio of the crimp of the warp and weft system. This change is referred to as crimp interchange. Crimp affects the mechanical properties of the fabric.

DEF

The ratio of the length of the figure to the width of the figure must be greater than 5 : 1 in order to be defined as a scratch. Macroscratches are equal to or greater than 0. 12 um in depth and must be visible to the unaided eye under both incandescent and fluorescent illumination.

Test for Special Form Radioactive Material.... Bending test : This test is performed only on long slender material with a minimum length of 10 cm and a length to minimum width ratio of not less than 10. The material is rigidly clamped in a horizontal position so that one half of its length protrudes from the face of the clamp. The orientation of the material is such that the package suffers maximum damage when its free end is struck by the flat face of a steel billet. The billet strikes the material so as to produce an impact equivalent to that resulting from a free vertical fall of 1. 4 kg through one metre.
