The active debris removal(ADR) concept has continuously evolved for the debris removal from the LEO [low Earth orbit] region. One of the evolving ADR methods is space robotics which has continuously matured over a couple of decades. In space robotics, the satellite system consists of a robotic arm mounted over it which can be called a debris chaser satellite. The main function of the debris chaser satellite is to chase, capture and de-orbit the space junk to a very low earth orbit.

Au cours d'une mission de retrait actif d'un débris spatial en orbite autour de la Terre, un engin spatial chasseur ou un satellite chasseur doit aller à la rencontre du débris de grande taille, par exemple un satellite cible, avec l'objectif de modifier son orbite soit pour une réentrée dans l'atmosphère ou un placement dans une orbite cimetière de ce dernier. Différentes techniques de capture de débris de grandes tailles ont été proposées et peuvent être classées en trois classes : une première classe dans laquelle un lien rigide entre le débris et l'engin chasseur est établi par exemple au travers de bras robotiques ou de mécanismes de saisie ou de prise; une deuxième classe dans laquelle un lien souple entre le débris et l'engin chasseur est mis en œuvre par exemple en utilisant des filets ou des harpons; une troisième classe, formée par des systèmes de capture sans contact de l'engin chasseur avec le débris et utilisant par exemple une projection de mousse ou un guidage par faisceau d'ions.

As Director General of Research Partnerships for NSERC(Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada), it was Leo Derikx who helped to create the Synergy Awards. Upon his retirement in 1999, the award for innovative models of long-standing interaction in the precompetitive stage of R&D was named in his honour.

The Astro/PGBA [Astro/plant generic bioprocessing apparatus] experiment hardware is contained in a double locker that will be installed into the EXPRESS Rack after the Shuttle is in orbit. The hardware consists of a plant growth chamber with a 10-inch by 12-inch growth area that allows 10 inches of plant height and 2 inches of roots. Fluorescent or LEO lighting will simulate sunlight, and an atmospheric control system will maintain set levels of carbon dioxide and humidity while scrubbing volatile organic compounds, such as ethylene, that can accumulate and inhibit plant growth. Plant transpiration water, collected from a dehumidifier system, can be recirculated back into the root matrix. A computer system will control experiment operations and provide engineering and video data for downlink to investigators on the ground.

Orbit control [consists in] controlling satellites to keep [them] flying on the designated orbit. When a satellite flies in low earth orbit(LEO), it gradually descends due to air drag. It is necessary to push the satellite back to the original orbit by activating station-keeping thrusters. Solar Orbital Transfer Vehicle(SOTV) GA is a major subcontractor to Boeing on the SOTV, a space vehicle that can efficiently transport space payloads from Low Earth Orbits(LEO) to Geosynchronous Orbits(GEO) while providing kilowatts of electrical power. A solar concentrator heats a graphite receiver up to temperatures of 2400 K. Heat from the graphite receiver is used to heat thermionic converters, which produce efficient, reliable electrical power. Alternately, hydrogen can be passed through passages within the graphite receiver, expanded out a nozzle and used to produce highly efficient propulsion. The SOTV has the potential to double the delivered payload mass to GEO.

Radar Observation Campaigns : Advanced Radar measurement techniques for the detection of sub-decimeter size objects in Low-Earth Orbits(LEO) are developed and applied by the German FGAN radar(at Wachtberg-Werthhoven). On 25/26 Nov. 1996 FGAN(as transmitter and receiver), and MPI at Effelsberg(as receiver only) jointly performed a 24 hour bi-static beam-park experiment with predicted detection thresholds of about 1 cm. The analysis of data is in progress.

From its geo-stationary(GEO) orbit 36, 000 km above the Earth, ARTEMIS can be in constant communication with satellites in LEO for long periods through its Optical Data Relay(ODR) and S-Ka band data relay(SKDR) payloads. The prime users for the optical link will be the SPOT-4 while the ESA's ENVISAT polar platform will be the prime user for the S/Ka link. Under an ESA/NASDA agreement, ARTEMIS will also serve Japanese spacecraft and the Japanese module of the International Space Station.

The first stage is a large(>80 m long, >40 m wing-span), unmanned hypersonic aircraft powered by hybrid, air-breathing turbo-ramjets to carry a smaller Hypersonic Orbital Reusable Upper Stage(HORUS) to an altitude of approximately 40 km. HORUS would then separate at a speed of more than Mach 6 and ignite conventional liquid oxygen/liquid hydrogen engines to reach LEO. With a 4-man crew, HORUS would be capable of delivering up to three metric tons to a baseline 450-km, 28. 5 inclination orbit. An unmanned version of HORUS, HORUS-C, could deliver up to seven metric tons of cargo and return a like amount to Earth.

The conventional method of specifying the noise level in a room is the NC(Noise Criteria) curve. Introduced in 1957 B. D.(before disco) by Leo Beranek, the data on which the NC curves were based was gathered from surveys of office workers on the effects of environmental noise on their ability to perform their work and to communicate speech. The curves were developed for the purpose of providing criteria for reducing complaints to tolerable levels.

Canine Distemper Virus in the Serengeti Lion(Panthera Leo). This paper was sparked off by Dr Thompson, who had received a video taken by Professor Ray Hilborn while in Tanzania, featuring a lion in the ’grand mal' stage of distemper. The unfortunate individual featured in the video was one of about 1, 000 lions struck by an outbreak of the disease on the Serengeti plain, Africa in 1993-94. This paper is basically a collection of abstracts and references about the disease in the lion(Panthera leo), accompanied by background knowledge, and a video showing the spectacular epileptiform fits suffered by this particular lion. It should be noted that distemper fits in other species are very similar. Distemper in the lion has been mistaken for rabie Canine Distemper Virus in the Serengeti Lion(Panthera Leo)
