LIFE CLOSURE [5 records]

Record 1 2017-12-14

English

Subject field(s)
  • Animal Anatomy
CONT

For the first month or so of life, the ruminant is functionally a monogastric. The forestomachs are formed, but are not yet fully developed. If milk is introduced into such a rumen, it basically rots rather than being fermented. To avoid this problem in such young ruminants, suckling causes a reflex closure of muscular folds that form a channel from the esophageal orifice toward the omasum(the esophageal groove), shunting milk away from the rumen and straight toward the stomach where it can be curdled by rennin and eventually digested enzymatically.

OBS

braided marrow gut: Marrow gut is not a gut at all, but a tube connecting the two stomachs of cud-chewing calf.

CONT

The ISS [International Space Station] Fluids and Combustion Facility(FCF)... FCF will usher in a new era of fluids and combustion research. It is a modular, multi-user, permanent microgravity science laboratory that is capable of accommodating a minimum of 10 combustion and fluids science investigations per year over an expected 10-year life cycle. The FCF will make it possible for researchers on the ground, with the assistance of the astronauts in space, to schedule and perform studies of how fluids and flames behave in the absence of gravity... The FCF will occupy three powered ISS racks and an equivalent amount of storage space and have rack closure doors and structural interfaces with the ISS.

OBS

Two new systems have been introduced for packing retail portions of meat : One is called the PUS and uses a laminated thermoformed tray made from polyamide(60 microns) and Surlyn(75 microns) together with a closure made of polyester(12 microns), PVDC(3 microns), and Surlyn(50 microns). Packaging, which is done on an automatic machine, is under vacuum. Increased shelf life form 2 up to 10 days is claimed. The other machine, the SAS, is similar but in the closing process a gas is introduced consisting of 80 per cent oxygen and 20 per cent CO2.
