Weevils feed on kernels, leaving only the hulls, and a severe infestation can reduce stored grain to a mass of hulls and frass(larval excrement). They often prepare the way for other insects that feed on damaged kernels but are unable to penetrate sound grain. In addition, the feeding weevils contribute to grain heating and further damage. The life cycle is similar for all weevils, with the females laying about 150 eggs.... Markings on their backs distinguish the species : the granary weevil is uniformly brownish or black in colour. 3, record 1, English, - granary%20weevil

1, record 1, French, - charan%C3%A7on%20des%20grains

Cadelle feed on many food materials: cereal grain and its products, oilseeds, cacao, spices, etc. Their presence is indicative of old, rotten grain around storage areas and poor sanitary conditions. 2, record 2, English, - cadelle
Record number: 2, Textual support number: 1 OBS
Cadelles are one of the largest insects to infest grain. They are shiny black in colour, about 8 to 9 millimetres in length, and easily recognized by their large mandibles with which they can gnaw through sacking and even wood. The larva is also easy to recognize, with its black head and two black prongs on the last segment. The larva also has dark spots on top of the dorsal section. The cadelle has one of the longest life cycles of the beetles. The females lay about 900 eggs. At 28 degrees C and a relative humidity of 70 to 80%, it takes about 80 days from egg to adult. When the average temperature drops to 23 degrees C, the larval stage lasts 13 months. Under colder conditions the life cycle may take three years. 2, record 2, English, - cadelle

2, record 2, French, - cadelle
Record number: 2, Textual support number: 1 OBS

The neem tree (Azadirachta indica) is regarded as one of mother nature’s gift to the world. ... The neem tree appears to be a biochemical factory producing a mixture of over 135 biologically active compounds. As a pesticide, the oil from neem seeds are believed to break the life cycle of pests and deters them from feeding and hatching. Studies have shown that active compounds in the oil inhibited the secretion of hormones into the blood inhibiting the molting and reproductive function in insects. 2, record 3, English, - pesticidal%20activity

The insecticidal nature of [Bacillus thuringiensis] is attributed to crystal-like proteins that are produced by Bt cells during the spore-forming stage of its life cycle. The crystal protein in Bt kills insects by binding to and disrupting the midgut(stomach) membranes. Susceptible insects will stop feeding within hours of ingesting Bt and will generally die within 2-5 days. The specificity of Bt lies in the fact that particular stomach enzymes(present only in certain insects) must activate the crystal proteins before they are considered toxic. Under normal conditions the crystal protein is insoluble(not active) and is therefore safe to humans, mammals and the majority of insects. 3, record 4, English, - insecticidal%20crystal%20protein
