The goal of this study is to show the feasibility of designing a space habitat that advances the ability of humans to live in space for long periods. We first review the previous work on space explorations and summarize five unsolved fundamental problems : providing gravity, radiation protection, sustainable life support systems, a large open space for human physiological and psychological comfort(survivable by professionals in trades other than highly trained astronauts), and a growth strategy to avoid the economic infeasibility of starting with the largest final version of the habitat.

Los hábitats espaciales se asemejan [...] a los refugios primitivos, a las construcciones cuyo principal fin era la supervivencia en medio de un entorno hostil. La arquitectura espacial está en una fase en la que tiene que centrar todos sus esfuerzos en proporcionar unos espacios habitables en el sentido más básico de la palabra. Espacios que solventen, en mayor o menor grado, los principales problemas que nos plantea este nuevo entorno. En este sentido, el primer reto que se nos presenta es el de proteger a los habitantes del espacio exterior, mediante hábitats cerrados, bien aislados frente a peligros como la radiación, la falta de oxígeno o las temperaturas extremas. Los hábitats espaciales tienen que ser ecosistemas completamente cerrados, que reutilicen sus recursos y no dejen escapar nada hacia el exterior. El intercambio de materia y energía con el vacío externo debe ser el mínimo posible. Es por esto que los nuevos hábitats tienen que ser completamente herméticos.

Report of a short term Task Force set up to develop a strategy for the effective reintegration and management of long term offenders (those serving ten years or more including lifers and those offenders with an indefinite sentence) - the report was approved by at the May, 1998 meeting of CSC’s [Correctional Service Canada] Executive Committee.

The predominant theme arising from the Report is the implementation of the Life Line concept. The concept has three essential components. They include InReach Services, which involves a successful lifer or long term offender who contacts, motivates and actively encourages lifers in their preparation for reintegration back to the community. The second is Community Programs and Services, which involves dedicated program resources for Lifers to ensure a process of gradual phased day parole leading to full parole. The final component is Public Education which involves community-based correctional agencies and their InReach workers who contribute to "public" understanding on the nature of the Lifer and long term offender population to increase support and understanding for the released offender. This may include speaking at schools, community organizations and youth at risk.
