This disclosure relates to a spacesuit and vehicle port interface(suitport) used in subject ingress and egress relative to the spaceport.... The suitport concept has evolved from concepts for rear entry space suits donned in conventional airlocks. As a result, existing rear-entry suit systems carry all the mechanisms needed to draw the "backpack" portable life support system(PLSS) to the upper torso of the pressure suit and all the levers, cams, and associated hardware used to secure the backpack to the suit to obtain a robust attachment and pressure seal.

CONT

In a military context, the term "Through Life Support, "among other definitions, is used to describe an arrangement between a service provider and a branch of the armed forces, where the responsibility, and risk, of operating an aircraft is delegated to the original system supplier or designated support partner. This trend sees defence moving away from acquiring a military system, the acquisition of a military capability. With the acquisition of the hardware comes a guarantee that the supplied product will meet a list of specific criteria, including, for example, pre-determined levels of dispatch reliability and availability.

The micro-WIS(Micro Wireless Instrumentation System) consists of tiny autonomous sensors for data acquisition... This HTD [Head-of-Train Telemetry Device] is designed to demonstrate the micro-WIS transmitter and recorder. One of the objectives of this HTD is to obtain meaningful real-time measurements for use in the orbiter's Environmental Control and Life Support System(ECLSS) operations. The micro-WIS transmitter's simultaneous real-time measurements of air cabin temperatures in many interior compartments of the orbiter will help ECLSS operations personnel address issues encountered on STS-88 and early International Space Station flights. Currently, only one temperature reading in the aft flight deck of the orbiter is available for adjusting model predictions for real-time environments. Micro-WIS will also reduce the time it takes the crew to obtain on-orbit temperature measurements and will increase the capability to monitor temperatures over long periods.... Micro-WIS data will also be used to validate cabin air temperature models that are used to make critical predictions of the dew point on early ISS [International Space Station] missions, which is important because orbiter cabin air exerts a significant influence on the entire station volume. Although the physical configuration of the air ducts in the orbiter cabin has been changed significantly, the sensors have remained the same and some temperature data has never been available.

Displays and Control Module(DCM). This is an irregularly shaped box of switches, valves, and digital displays that gets mounted on the chest. It controls the primary life support system and the secondary oxygen pack.

CONT

Displays and Control Module(DCM)... Along the top are switches for power, communications mode selection, caution and warning. There is also a switch that controls the water that is fed to the Liquid Cooling-and-Ventilation Garment. A digital display is used to monitor the various suit circuits. At the top left of this module is an emergency relief valve. If the primary life support system were to ever malfunction, the astronaut would still have access to the secondary oxygen pack. To activate this secondary oxygen pack, all the astronaut would have to do is open a purge valve by squeezing a set of pinchers. This valve releases air pressure on the chest plate-this is the same valve that is used at the end of EVA [Extravehicular Activity] to depressurize the suit. Also on the left, a step down from the purge valve, is the mechanical-suit pressure gauge. Along the right-hand side of the module, are two switches : the ventilation-fan switch and the push-to-talk switch. The ventilation-fan switch can activate and deactivate a fan which circulates air through the helmet and other parts of the suit. The push-to-talk switch is similar to one you would find on a CB [Citizen Band] radio. If the astronaut wants to talk, he has to push the button to be heard, and if he wants to receive voice messages, he has to release the button. On the front of the panel are other controls for volume, temperature, and suit pressure.

Environment Control and Life Support System(ECLSS) : The orbiter's Environmental Control and Life-Support System purifies the cabin air, adds fresh oxygen, keeps the pressure at sea level, heats and cools the air, and provides drinking and wash water. The system also includes lavatory facilities. The cabin is pressurized to sea level(14. 7 psi) with 21 percent oxygen and 79 percent nitrogen, comparable to Earth's atmosphere. The air is circulated through lithium hydroxide/charcoal canisters which remove carbon dioxide. The canisters are changed on a regular basis. Excess heat from the cabin and flight-deck electronics is collected by a circulating coolant water system and transferred to radiator panels on the payload bay doors where it is dissipated. The fuel cells produce about seven pounds of water each hour. It is stored in tanks, and excess water is dumped overboard. The lavatory unit collects and processes body waste, and also collects wash water from the personal hygiene station. The lavatory unit, located in the middeck area, operates much like those on commercial airlines but is designed for a weightless space environment.

The Primary Life Support System is a unit permanently attached to the back of the torso and a control/display unit mounted in front. The backpack supplies pure oxygen(rather than air, a mix of nitrogen and oxygen) for breathing, and pressurizes the suit to keep body fluids in liquid form. It also ventilates the suit and circulates cooling water through the tubes in the undergarment next to the astronaut's body, absorbs carbon dioxide that the astronaut exhales and scrubs odors from the suit's atmosphere.

The Extravehicular Mobility Unit(EMU) consists of an integrated Space Suit Assembly(SSA) and Life Support Subsystem(LSS) with other crew items designed for Extravehicular Activity(EVA) outside the shuttle Space Transportation System(STS) orbiter or ISS. The NASA EMU provides life support functions, such as oxygen supply, carbon dioxide removal, a pressurized enclosure, temperature control and micrometeoroid protection, so astronauts can leave their shirtsleeve environment and work effectively in space.

OBS

Although the term space suit is sometimes used to designate the "extravehicular mobility unit" [EMU], "space suit" is, in fact, synonymous with "space suit assembly" which is a component of the EMU.
