CONT

Rocky shores... are characterized by the life that lives in the intertidal zone – the area between the high tide and low tide water levels. Life on rocky shores is tough. It is dominated by the need to deal with very high wave energy, regular exposure to the air/sun, and interactions between these two physical stressors and the strong biological pressure applied by voracious intertidal predators.

CONT

The modern marine environment is divided into two major realms, the benthic and the pelagic, based upon the ecological characteristics and marine life associated with them.... The benthic realm refers to the floor of the oceans, extending from the high tide line to the greatest ocean depths.... The pelagic realm consists of all of the ocean water covering the benthic realm. It is divided horizontally into the neritic, or fertile near-shore, province and the oceanic province. Vertically it is divided into the euphotic, or photic, zone and the aphotic(without sunlight) zone.

CONT

Two major zones can be distinguished: the benthic and the pelagic zone. … Pelagic zone (the water above the bottom). Animals that are strong swimmers and live in open water and middle layers of the water are called nekton. They include squids, whales, and adult fish. Plankton are organisms that move passively with the water currents, and inhabit the upper layers of the pelagic zone.

DEF

The Carolinian life zone is the northernmost edge of the deciduous forest region in eastern North America, and is named after the Carolina states.... The climate of this region is the main reason it forms a unique ecosystem. Affectionately termed the "banana belt" of Canada, this zone boasts the warmest average annual temperatures, the longest frost-free seasons, and the mildest winters in Ontario.... Botanists have mapped the idstribution of plants in Ontario, and have established the boundary of the Carolinian life zone based on the northern limits of the many species which are found only within this region in Canada.

CONT

The air blast chiller provides critical temperature control during conventional food preparation. The blast chiller is more efficient in cooling foods than the standard storage refrigerator.... Initially, the blast chiller was designed to support cook/chill programs where foods were prepared or cooked, rapidly cooled through the 140°F-45°F "danger zone, "and held in refrigerated inventories to be reheated and served later. Rapid cooling prolonged the safe storage life of these foods... Hence the blast chiller was developed, offering greater heat removal capacity and utilizing high-velocity, convected air directed through the product zone to promote fast, even cooling of foods.

The great differences between the littoral and profundal benthos are controlled in part by the environmental conditions and in part by the life cycles of the individual species. In the littoral zone with its coarser sediments, wave action, a continuous supply of oxygen, warm temperatures, plus light and plants, diversity of species is the chief characteristic. Insects and mollusks are dominant, many of them confined to the littoral. All other groups of fresh-water animals also occur here.

CONT

The great differences between the littoral and profundal benthos are controlled in part by the environmental conditions and in part by the life cycles of the individual species... In the profundal zone... soft sediments, virtual absence of light, low temperatures, and potentially severe chemical conditions, especially reduction in oxygen content, severely restrict the species composition. Midge larvae, oligochaetes, and fingernail clams are the most characteristic of the larger animals.

CONT

The benthos is subdivided into the littoral and deep-sea systems. The deep-sea benthos is further divided into the archibenthic (upper) and abyssalbenthic (lower) zones.

CONT

The profundal benthos of lakes is quite distinct from that of shallower water ...

OBS

Depending on the depth distribution, benthos is regarded as epibenthos (living between low water line and 200 m depth), mesobenthos (living at depths between 200 and 1000 m, hypobenthos (living between 1000 and 2000 m) and abyssal benthos (living below 2000 m).
