Crustáceo decápodo macruro, que alcanza hasta cinco decímetros de longitud, con todas sus patas terminadas en pinzas pequeñas, cuatro antenas, dos centrales cortas y dos laterales muy largas y fuertes, ojos prominentes, cuerpo casi cilíndrico, y cola larga y gruesa.

Es de color fusco que se vuelve rojo por la cocción. Vive en alta mar, y su carne se tiene por manjar delicado.

No confundir la langosta, de color rojo-naranja y dos antenas muy largas, con el bogavante, similar a la langosta, pero con dos extremidades que terminan en pinzas muy grandes y robustas y que posee un color rojo más intenso y muchas veces más oscuro.

There are two methods for serving lobster in the shell. The shell can be broken apart using lobster crackers and the meat then picked out, or the lobster can be cut in half down the centre and the claws cut open with a large heavy knife. All of the lobster is edible except for the shell, the small stomach(hard sac) behind the head and the dark vein, running down the back of the tail.
