As used herein, the term "contact force" refers to a mechanical force applied through physical contact between two solid objects such as a force applied by pushing or mechanical engagement, or a force applied via friction, but does not extend to any force which requires adhesion between the two objects nor to magnetic attraction or repulsion between the two objects.

After a coat of paint has dried, dry film thickness is important, for it largely determines how long the structure will be protected. There are several dry thickness gauges. Often they depend on the fact that a film between a magnetic metal and a magnet reduces the attraction of the magnet for the metal.

The deconvolution of gravity or magnetic data requires the separation of two basic components of the potential fields: one component represents a basic irreducible wave form or signature of the potential field, and the other represents the position and scale or distribution of this wave form throughout the area of measurement.

The Laplace equation is equivalent in three dimensions to the inverse square law of gravitational or electrical attraction(in source-free regions; in regions with sources, it becomes Poisson's equation).
