The intrinsic angular momentum of an elementary particle or nucleus, which exists even when the particle is at rest, as distinguished from orbital angular momentum. 3, record 2, English, - quantum%20mechanical%20spin
Record number: 2, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Elementary particles can be described in terms of a few simple properties. The most obvious of these are the mass and electric charge of the particle.... There is a... property which all particles carry, quantum mechanical spin. The name spin comes from an analogy with classical electro-magnetics. In classical electromagnetic theory, it is well known that a charged particle that is moving through a magnetic field will be deflected. If the particle... is spinning about some axis the deflection will be changed; i. e. the particle will go in a different direction than if it wasn’t spinning. The effect will depend on both the rate of spin and the rotation axis. In quantum mechanics, a similar effect is observed with any quantum particle. When passed through magnetic fields, they behave as if they are spinning electric charges. What's more, they behave as if their rates of spin are integral 0, 1, 2,... or half-integral(1/2, 3/2,...) of a base unit... much like charges come in basic multiples of the electron's charge. The concept of spin here is a bit more abstract than in the classical case. With a classical particle you can paint a little dot on the particle... and directly measure the rotation rate by counting the number of times you see the spot in a minute. This is not possible for quantum particles. They are not little spinning balls in that sense. 1, record 2, English, - quantum%20mechanical%20spin

The heading indicator(HI) uses the principle of rigidity in space for it's operation. The gyro is mounted such that it registers changes around the vertical axis only; i. e. direction changes. The compass card attached to the gyro appears to the pilot as though it is turning. In reality, it and the attached gyro are remaining rigid in space, while the aircraft and case turn about the gyro. The HI is not automatically synchronized with the magnetic compass. It must be set to the compass heading while level on the airport surface prior to take-off. 13, record 3, English, - directional%20gyroscope

Record number: 3, Textual support number: 2 CONT

Angular rate gyro accuracy is characterized by two parameters: scale factor and drift. The scale factor describes the capability of the gyro to accurately sense angular velocity at different angular rates ... Gyro drift characterizes the ability of the gyro to reference all rate measurements to the nominal zero point. It appears as an additive term on the gyro output, so any actual drift away from a given or predetermined value will cause the angular errors to accumulate. 3, record 4, English, - gyro%20drift

The free gyro... can be converted to a directional reference by remounting its case with the spin axis horizontal and the indicator axis vertical. The indicator will then give the airplane's heading. Gyro drift is countered by slaving the instrument to the Earth's magnetic field, via either a separate magnetic compass or a flux valve device. 5, record 4, English, - gyro%20drift

Tokamak... is an acronym created from the Russian words, "TOroidalnaya KAmera ee MAgnitnaya Katushka, "or "Toroidal Chamber and Magnetic Coil, "and denotes a class of systems for the toroidal magnetic confinement of thermonuclear fusion plasmas. Originally designed by Andrei Sakharov(1921-1989) and developed in the USSR, the tokamak began setting performance records for magnetic confinement fusion systems in the late 1960s and remains the leading concept for magnetic confinement fusion today. The tokamak configuration is perhaps most easily visualized by considering a cylindrical vacuum tube(typically of D or O-shaped cross section) which has been bent around a symmetry axis into a torus. 1, record 15, English, - tokamak%20configuration

A device which makes use of a planet’s magnetic field to stabilise a satellite. 4, record 21, English, - magnetotorquer
Record number: 21, Textual support number: 1 CONT
The angular momentum of a tumbling orbiting satellite is changed to reduce the spinning of the spacecraft such that the spacecraft can operate in an essentially stabilized condition. The change in spin rate is accomplished by the development of a magnetic torque by commutation of magnetic air coils in response to Earth sensor signals controlled by spacecraft logic. The coils are disposed to produce magnetic dipoles transverse to the satellite spin axis such that by interacting with the Earth's magnetic field a torque is developed in a direction opposite the spin vector. The logic selects the proper magnetic dipole based upon data from sensors detecting the presence of the Earth for the development of the desired magnetic torque. 5, record 21, English, - magnetotorquer

Magnetoplasmadynamic(MPD) thrusters pass a large current radially outwards through a neutral plasma, from a central cathode to an annular anode. The radial current induces an azimuthal, circular magnetic field. The Lorentz body force acting on ions moving in the discharge current accelerates the plasma along the axis of the electrode structure. MPD thrusters operate at high power levels, kilowatts to megawatts, and provide high thrust with moderate specific impulse. A variant of this design uses an externally applied magnetic field to enable operation at lower power levels. MPD thrusters have been tested in the laboratory and have flown on test and demonstration missions. MPD thrusters are an insufficiently mature technology and consume too much power to be considered as candidates to provide primary propulsion of future out of Earth orbit missions and were not considered for SMART-1. 3, record 22, English, - magnetoplasmadynamic%20thruster

The gyroscope principle has been utilized in many... applications such as the gyrocompass and gyropilot... A compensated magnetic compass, free from external accelerations, indicates magnetic north, which varies from true north... A gyrocompass, however, when properly adjusted, can be made to indicate true north... Aircraft gyrocompasses are based on automatically monitored directional gyroscopes in which the monitoring device senses the direction of the meridian and ensures that the gyroscope axis is maintained in this direction. The monitoring device consists of a magnetic sensing unit, called the flux valve, and allowance is made for variation in the direction of the Earth's magnetic field. 1, record 33, English, - aircraft%20gyrocompass

6, record 35, French, - moment%20magn%C3%A9tique

(...) F. J. Vine and D. H. Matthews of the University of Cambridge proposed a convincing test of the hypothesis advanced by Hess. It was based on the discovery(...) that the earth's magnetic field had reversed direction a number of times in past ages. They reasoned that if molten rock were pushed up along the axis of the mid-ocean ridge, it would become magnetized in the direction of the earth's prevailing magnetic field as it cooled. If the newly cooled material was subsequently pushed out away from the ridge, it would form strips of alternately "normal" and "reversed" magnetism, depending on the polarity of the earth's magnetic field when the rock solidified. 2, record 44, English, - Vine%20and%20Matthews%26rsquo%3B%20hypothesis
