Record number: 3, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Nanoscale sensor approaches the quantum regime. Two physicists in the US have made a motion sensor that can detect movements as small as a thousandth of a nanometre. The sensor combines a nanoelectromechanical bridge and a single-electron transistor, and could be used in applications where ultrahigh precision is essential, such as magnetic resonance microscopy. And if the sensitivity of the device could be improved by a factor of 100 it would be possible to detect quantum effects in a macroscopic system(R Knoel and A Cleland 2003 Nature 424 291). 7, record 3, English, - nanosensor

Record number: 3, Textual support number: 1 DEF
7, record 3, French, - nanocapteur
Record number: 3, Textual support number: 1 CONT
8, record 3, French, - nanocapteur

The IMP can detect mines buried in the ground to a maximum depth of 45 centimeters(18 inches), but it would take a highly trained operator to notice mines buried that deep. In its plastic tubular search head there are three coils. One transmits while the other two receive. Together these coils generate a magnetic induction bridge that is initially balanced for zero coupling. When the search head passes over a metallic object the induction bridge becomes unstable and produces an audible signal in the headset. 2, record 4, English, - IMP%20mine%20detector
