[The computer peripheral equipment operator operates] computer peripheral equipment, such as printer, plotter, computer output microfiche machine, and document reader-sorter to transfer data to and from computer and to convert data from one format to another. Reads instructions and schedule, such as schedule of documents to be printed, or receives instructions from supervisor orally, to determine work for shift. Mounts reels and cartridges of magnetic tape in tape drives, loads paper in printer, loads checks or other documents in magnetic ink reader-sorter or optical character reader, sets guides, keys, and switches, enters commands into computer, using computer terminal, and performs other tasks, to start and operate peripheral machines.

Proceso por el que una máquina reconoce los caracteres impresos con tinta magnética, y los convierte en códigos que pueden ingresarse directamente a la computadora (ordenador).

OBS

Dichos caracteres son legibles, no sólo por la máquina, sino también por el hombre y pueden consistir en dígitos, letras u otros símbolos. La tinta contiene una substancia magnética que se magnetiza al insertarse el documento en la máquina permitiendo que cada carácter sea detectado por las cabezas de lectura. Para que la máquina reconozca y codifique los caracteres, éstos deben tener forma y tamaño apropiados y una alta calidad de impresión. Uno de los usos más comunes son los caracteres especiales cifrados en los cheques bancarios y en los formularios para depósitos de dinero.

A typesetter that stores font digitally instead of on film, assembles data in a series of electronic pulses, and then produces images in the form of lines or dots.

CONT

Digital typesetting machines can store enormous numbers of type fonts for almost instant retrieval and can generate characters in almost any size at rates of up to 15, 000 characters per second. The data are entered into the machine by means of punch-coded paper tape, by magnetic tape or disk or as a stream of data from an external computer... Once the font, size and position of each character on the page have been specified, the data are assembled into a series of electronic pulses by an internal, "slave" computer which drives a marking engine.
