Nanolithography is the art and science of etching, writing, or printing at the microscopic level, where the dimensions of characters are on the order of nanometres. This includes various methods of modifying semiconductor chips at the atomic level for the purpose of fabricating integrated circuits (ICs). Instruments used in nanolithography include the scanning tunnelling microscope (STM) and the atomic force microscope (AFM). Both allow surface viewing in fine detail without necessarily modifying it. Either the STM or the AFM can be used to etch, write, or print on a surface in single-atom dimensions.

Take for example, the alloy with terbium and dysprosium commonly known as Terfenol-D ... which exhibits a very high magnetostriction; this alloy is said to have "Giant" Magnetostriction.

The length of the rod changes as current is applied to the coil surrounding it. Thus, actuation is provided only by the changing length of the rod, although some mechanical amplification(e. g. : using a lever arm) may be advantageous.

The DC motor can be made to run faster than the basic "balancing speed" achieved whilst in the full parallel configuration without any resistance in circuit. This is done by "field shunting". An additional circuit is provided in the motor field to weaken the current flowing through the field. The weakening is achieved by placing a resistance in parallel with the field. This has the effect of forcing the armature to speed up to restore the balance between its magnetic filed and that being produced in the field coils. It makes the train go faster.

Le shuntage consiste à réduire le bobinage du stator des moteurs à courant continu, diminuant ainsi le champ d'excitation des inducteurs. Conséquence, la courbe effort-vitesse des moteurs subit une déformation qui fait glisser la locomotive vers des vitesses plus élevées et ce tout en gardant la même puissance. Cette opération qui permet de pousser la locomotive à courant continu dans ses derniers retranchements est également utile pour effectuer le démarrage de convoi lourd sans dépasser les limites de courants dans la caténaire.

There are three types of fluorescent circuits : rapid start, instant start and preheat. The preheat circuit was used when fluorescent lamp first came available. This technology is very little used today, except for low-wattage magnetic ballast applications such as compact fluorescents. A separate starting switch, called a starter, is used to aid in forming the arc. The filament needs some time to reach proper temperature so the lamp does not strike for a few seconds.
