The construction comprised of the magnets and wires forms a matrix called the plane. A magnetic field is created as the core magnets sit on the wires at a 45-degree angle. Both reading and writing operations are accomplished with the help of a third wire called the inhibit line.

CONT

Even though it is possible to have a single winding serving as the sense line during reading and the inhibit line during writing, the design of the circuit becomes too complex since the sense signal strength is nearly two orders of magnitude lesser than [the] inhibit drive current.

When AC is applied to a coil, a varying magnetic field will be produced around it. When another coil is placed within that magnetic field, it will induce a current flowing in that coil. This principle is called MUTUAL INDUCTANCE The amount of mutual inductance between the two coils depends on the distance between the two coils, and the angle between the two coils. When two coils are linked together via mutual inductance in this manner, we say that the coils are inductively COUPLED. When the mutually inductive coils are close to each other, we say that they are closely, or tightly coupled. When they are far apart, we say that they are loosely coupled. The greatest amount of coupling occurs when the coils are wound one directly over the other and on a closed iron core. The quantity of coupling between two coils is sometimes referred to as the Coefficient of Coupling.

CONT

Three Materials Science Research Racks will be a major portion of the U. S. Laboratory facilities. The European Space Agency will provide the core for the Experiment Module that will occupy the right half of the rack and will house five insert modules. NASA and ESA [European Space Agency] each will provide two inserts, and the German Space Agency(DLR) will provide a fifth. Each of the five inserts will be a furnace to process materials in different ways, such as melting and freezing a sample from one end to the other(directional solidification) or quenching a sample quickly to "freeze" its condition. The German insert will be a special furnace that uses a rotating magnetic field to control flows within the molten samples. The left half of the rack will be occupied for nine months by equipment from NASA's Space Products Development Division, before it is made available to microgravity science researchers. The Experiment Modules and their inserts will be replaceable in orbit, so an entire rack will not have to be returned to Earth. There will be a single experiment module in each rack with the experiment support systems taking the left half of the rack and an Experiment Module taking the right half of the rack.

Spurious signals become more important as the number of interrogated magnetic cores increases. In computer memories it is usual practice to wind the reading wire of a core matrix in such a way that unwanted effects cancel out to the maximum possible extent.

The instruments used for magnetotelluric measurements of resistivity are simple in principle, consisting of separate sensors and recorders for the alternating electric and magnetic fields(...) The oscillatory electric fields are recorded by nonpolarizing porous-pot electrodes made up of cadmium immersed in cadmium chloride solution. The magnetic signals are sensed by induction coils containing up to 30, 000 turns of copper wire wound around a core of molybdenum and permalloy 6 ft long and 1/2 in diameter. A special chopper-type preamplifier is used in recording the magnetic oscillations.
