A flight director is a highly sophisticated system that electronically collects the information provided by a number of instruments, feeds this information into a computer and presents it in two visual displays. The two instruments that provide this visual display are a horizontal situation indicator (HSI) and an attitude director indicator (ADI). Usually the flight director installation is combined with an autopilot system. The entire package is then known as a flight control system.

Different manufacturers give other names to the components of their systems. The HSI is sometimes called the "pictorial navigation indictor" (PNI) and the ADI is sometimes called the "flight command indicator."

The HSI, or Horizontal Navigation Indicator or Pictorial Navigation Indicator, is perhaps one of the most useful although misunderstood instruments around... it combines your directional gyro and Nav indicator into one instrument that reduces pilot workload by providing heading, course reference, course deviation and glide slope information all in one visual aid... You may also consider a slaved HSI. Slaving automatically compensates for gyro heading errors and keeps your HSI in agreement with your compass. It uses a magnetic flux sensor mounted in the wing or tail of your aircraft to sense changes in magnetic heading and sends corrective signals to your HSI.

Directional Compass... The compass displays the directional heading of the Gizmo in degrees, shown in both analog and digital format. The dial is accurate within 23 degree increments; the digital readout is accurate to smaller values.

Heading Hold (HH) or Heading Lock. A feature mode of some gyros that stands out by its property to hold the heading of a helicopter and resist the tendency to weathervane. Once trimmed, the tail needs very little input to hold a directional heading, even in high cross-wind conditions.

erupting prominences. Although prominence equilibria are maintained on a long period of time, many quiescent prominences do ultimately erupt in a dramatic event lasting only a few hours. Incredibly, the eruption always occurs outwards, away from the surface, indicating that the magnetic field which originally supported the prominence has suddenly released its stored energy. This energy release is sufficient to drive the dense plasma outwards against the Sun's huge gravitational pull. After the eruption, most of the material does eventually fall back down towards the surface and the prominence will often reform again at the same location over the course of a few days.

This course is designed for chemistry students wishing to become familiar with the use of high resolution nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR) spectroscopy and mass spectrometry for the determination of molecular structure and dynamics in solution. The NMR part of the course deals with analysis of second-order proton spectra, with extraction of coupling constants and chemical shifts from spectra. Then the topics of pulsed and Fourier transform NMR are introduced and applied to natural abundance 13C spectra. Problem solving with combined 1H and 13C NMR data is emphasized. Subsequently the use of spin lattice relaxation times for dynamics is discussed, followed by an introduction to 2 dimensional(2D) NMR.

Occasionally used to mean a DECtape, as opposed to a MACROTAPE. A DECtape is a small reel about four inches in diameter of magnetic tape about an inch wide. Unlike those for today's macrotapes, microtape drivers allowed random access to the data. In their heyday they were used in pretty much same way one would now use a floppy disk : as a small, portable way to save and transport files and programs. Apparently the term microtape was actually the official term used within DEC for these tapes until someone coined the word "DECtape, "which of course sounded sexier to the marketroids...
