A superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) is a mechanism used to measure extremely weak signals, such as subtle changes in the human body’s electromagnetic energy field. 3, record 6, English, - superconducting%20quantum%20interference%20device
Record number: 6, Textual support number: 2 CONT
Using a device called a Josephson junction, a SQUID can detect a change of energy as much as 100 billion times weaker than the electromagnetic energy that moves a compass needle. A Josephson junction is made up of two superconductors, separated by an insulating layer so thin that electrons can pass through. A SQUID consists of tiny loops of superconductors employing Josephson junctions to achieve superposition : each electron moves simultaneously in both directions. Because the current is moving in two opposite directions, the electrons have the ability to perform as qubits(that theoretically could be used to enable quantum computing). SQUIDs have been used for a variety of testing purposes that demand extreme sensitivity, including engineering, medical, and geological equipment. Because they measure changes in a magnetic field with such sensitivity, they do not have to come in contact with a system that they are testing. 3, record 6, English, - superconducting%20quantum%20interference%20device

4, record 6, French, - dispositif%20supraconducteur%20%C3%A0%20interf%C3%A9rence%20quantique

The housing acts as part of the magnetic circuit, which also includes a conventional permanent magnet for biasing(not visible). Thus, actuation is provided only by the changing length of the rod, although some mechanical amplification(e. g. : using a lever arm) may be advantageous. 2, record 40, English, - Terfenol%2DD

A Superconducting Tunnel Junction(STJ-or Josephson junction) consists of two thin films of a superconducting metal such as niobium, tantalum or hafnium separated by a thin insulating layer. When operated at temperatures well below the superconductor's critical temperature(typically below 1 K), the equilibrium state of the junction is easily perturbed by any photon striking it. By applying a small bias voltage across the junction and a suitable parallel magnetic field to suppress the Josephson current, an electrical charge proportional to the energy of the perturbing photon can be extracted from the device. 1, record 58, English, - superconducting%20tunnel%20junction

... electric propulsion(EP) encompasses a broad variety of strategies for achieving very high exhaust velocities in order to reduce the total propellant burden and corresponding launch mass of present and future space transportation systems. These techniques group broadly into three categories : electrothermal propulsion, wherein the propellant is electrically heated, then expanded thermodynamically through a nozzle; electrostatic propulsion, wherein ionized propellant particles are accelerated through an electric field; and electromagnetic propulsion, wherein current driven through a propellant plasma interacts with an internal or external magnetic field to provide a stream-wise body force. 2, record 61, English, - electrostatic%20propulsion

Magnetoplasmadynamic(MPD) thrusters pass a large current radially outwards through a neutral plasma, from a central cathode to an annular anode. The radial current induces an azimuthal, circular magnetic field. The Lorentz body force acting on ions moving in the discharge current accelerates the plasma along the axis of the electrode structure. MPD thrusters operate at high power levels, kilowatts to megawatts, and provide high thrust with moderate specific impulse. A variant of this design uses an externally applied magnetic field to enable operation at lower power levels. MPD thrusters have been tested in the laboratory and have flown on test and demonstration missions. MPD thrusters are an insufficiently mature technology and consume too much power to be considered as candidates to provide primary propulsion of future out of Earth orbit missions and were not considered for SMART-1. 3, record 62, English, - magnetoplasmadynamic%20thruster

The pulsed plasma thruster(PPT) with solid propellant is used for low power propulsion systems; typically with an average power less than thirty watts. Capacitor stored electrical energy is used to create a pulsed arc discharge across the face of a block of propellant, teflon in most implementations to date. The combination of thermal flux, particle bombardment and surface reactions ablates and ionises a small amount of the solid material... The peak discharge current is high, in the region of tens of kA. The self-induced magnetic field acts on the ions moving in the electric field creating the discharge to create a Lorentz body force that accelerates the plasma. Teflon PPTs have enjoyed limited use in east-west station keeping and sun pointing applications. PPTs do not produce sufficient thrust to be considered as candidates to provide primary propulsion of future out of Earth orbit missions and were not considered for SMART-1. 2, record 63, English, - pulsed%20plasma%20thruster

Orbiting Geophysical Observatory(OGO), series of six orbiting observatories launched between 1964 and 1969 by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration(NASA) to study the earth's atmosphere, ionosphere, and magnetosphere and the solar wind. In order to provide global coverage, three of the satellites(OGO-2, OGO-4, and OGO-6) were launched into low polar orbits while the other three(OGO-1, OGO-3, and OGO-5) were placed in eccentric orbits ranging out as far as almost 92, 830 mi(150, 000 km). Each observatory carried 20-25 instruments, including cosmic ray detectors, counters, and telescopes, ionization chambers, Geiger counters, magnetometers, spectrometers, photometers, micrometeoroid detectors, and ion and electron traps. Among the significant achievements of the OGO program were the first observations of daytime auroras and of the protons responsible for the ring of electric current that surrounds the earth during magnetic storms, the collection of data showing the interaction of the solar wind with the earth's magnetosphere, and the verification of the existence of the plasmapause, the inner boundary of the region of trapped radiation in the magnetosphere. 2, record 71, English, - Orbiting%20Geophysical%20Observatory

The DC motor can be made to run faster than the basic "balancing speed" achieved whilst in the full parallel configuration without any resistance in circuit. This is done by "field shunting". An additional circuit is provided in the motor field to weaken the current flowing through the field. The weakening is achieved by placing a resistance in parallel with the field. This has the effect of forcing the armature to speed up to restore the balance between its magnetic filed and that being produced in the field coils. It makes the train go faster. 2, record 72, English, - field%20shunting

1, record 72, French, - shuntage%20par%20d%C3%A9rivation

When AC is applied to a coil, a varying magnetic field will be produced around it. When another coil is placed within that magnetic field, it will induce a current flowing in that coil. This principle is called MUTUAL INDUCTANCE The amount of mutual inductance between the two coils depends on the distance between the two coils, and the angle between the two coils. When two coils are linked together via mutual inductance in this manner, we say that the coils are inductively COUPLED. When the mutually inductive coils are close to each other, we say that they are closely, or tightly coupled. When they are far apart, we say that they are loosely coupled. The greatest amount of coupling occurs when the coils are wound one directly over the other and on a closed iron core. The quantity of coupling between two coils is sometimes referred to as the Coefficient of Coupling. 2, record 73, English, - mutual%20inductance

But it is as remarkable as the first steam-ship : it has no paddles, propellers or jet-driver. Actually, it has no mechanical power-transmission system at all. But it relies on the "Lorentz force"-i. e. a thrust that is generated when a magnetic force is applied vertically into the water and an electric current discharged horizontally across its path. 1, record 92, English, - superconducting%20electromagnetic%20propulsion%20system

SEMP thrusters are made up of superconducting magnets wrapped around ducts in the hull of Yamato 1. Electrodes pass a current through the seawater as it is drawn into the front of the ducts. The magnets, cooled at-269° C, then punch a huge magnetic force into the water. The resulting "Lorentz force" causes the water to squirt through the rear of the ducts to propel the ship along. 1, record 92, English, - superconducting%20electromagnetic%20propulsion%20system

A new type of electric motor, a brushless motor with no windings or permanent magnets on its rotor. When a current flows in one of the group of windings in the case around the rotor, it creates a magnetic effect which pulls a tooth on the rotor into a position of "minimum reluctance". Rotation continues by switching the current to another winding and pulling another tooth into position. Switch the current fast enough, and the motor spins. 1, record 93, English, - switched%20reluctance%20motor

Such motors have been turning since 1840, but the new SRM designs provide a practical way of switching large currents many thousands of times a second. Several companies including Black and Decker (power tools), Kenwood (food mixes) and Vent-Axia (fans) are sponsoring an SRM development programme. This technology may produce smaller and even simpler electric motors that could be integrated within the hub of a carwheel or of a boat. 1, record 93, English, - switched%20reluctance%20motor
