MAGNETIC DEFLECTION [9 records]

Record 1 2020-01-28

Subject field(s)
  • Atomic Physics
DEF

The intrinsic angular momentum of an elementary particle or nucleus, which exists even when the particle is at rest, as distinguished from orbital angular momentum.

CONT

Elementary particles can be described in terms of a few simple properties. The most obvious of these are the mass and electric charge of the particle.... There is a... property which all particles carry, quantum mechanical spin. The name spin comes from an analogy with classical electro-magnetics. In classical electromagnetic theory, it is well known that a charged particle that is moving through a magnetic field will be deflected. If the particle... is spinning about some axis the deflection will be changed; i. e. the particle will go in a different direction than if it wasn’t spinning. The effect will depend on both the rate of spin and the rotation axis. In quantum mechanics, a similar effect is observed with any quantum particle. When passed through magnetic fields, they behave as if they are spinning electric charges. What's more, they behave as if their rates of spin are integral 0, 1, 2,... or half-integral(1/2, 3/2,...) of a base unit... much like charges come in basic multiples of the electron's charge. The concept of spin here is a bit more abstract than in the classical case. With a classical particle you can paint a little dot on the particle... and directly measure the rotation rate by counting the number of times you see the spot in a minute. This is not possible for quantum particles. They are not little spinning balls in that sense.

  • Vacuum Tubes (Electronics)
  • Electromagnetism
  • Television (Radioelectricity)
DEF

The moving of the electron beam by means of a magnetic field produced by a coil around the neck of the cathode-ray tube.

CONT

Magnetic deflection of the electron beam can be used instead of electrostatic deflection. A magnetic deflecting field is established in the tube just past the electron gun to react with the magnetic field associated with the electron-beam current, producing a force that deflects the electrons at right angles to both the beam-current axis and the deflection field.

OBS

Linear motion is produced by a sawtooth current through the coil.

DEF

in a cathode-ray tube, the displacement of an electron beam from its straight-line path after it leaves the electron gun by an electrostatic or electromagnetic field.

CONT

Now, however, magnetic deflection is used, and the spot is deflected by variation of the magnetic fields through which the beam of electrons has to pass before reaching the screen.

DEF

Le faisceau électronique, plongé dans un champ électrique ou un champ magnétique est soumis à des forces. Sa trajectoire, initialement rectiligne, est donc incurvée, paraboliquement dans un champ électrique, circulairement dans un champ magnétique. Ce phénomène est utilisé dans les tubes T.V.

CONT

Les organes de déviation sont disposés à la bouche du canon à électrons et peuvent être également de deux sortes : électrostatiques ou magnétiques.

DEF

A coil placed around the neck of an electron beam tube to produce a magnetic field for deflection of one or more electron beams.

CONT

Electrostatic deflection of the beam in two directions for scanning is obtained by mean of two mutually perpendicular pairs of plates(electrodes) or by means of a magnetic deflecting coil.

CONT

Picture tubes use magnetic deflection, therefore, with two pairs of deflection coils in the yoke housing on the neck of the picture tube. The associated magnetic field of sawtooth current in the deflection coils moves the electron beam horizontally and vertically to scan the raster.

CONT

Extérieurement au tube, un ensemble de «bobines de balayage» assure la déviation magnétique du faisceau pour balayer l'écran.

CONT

L'on obtient une déviation électrostatique à l'aide de deux paires de plaques respectivement perpendiculaires ou d'une bobine déviatrice magnétique.
