The fractional quantum Hall effect(FQHE) arises from strong correlations between electrons when they are confined to two dimensions and exposed to a strong magnetic field. The underlying physics is the formation of topological particles called composite fermions(CFs), electron-vortex bound states whose integer quantum Hall effect explains a large majority of the observed FQHE states. 2, record 1, English, - composite%20fermion

Tunnel magnetoresistance(TMR) is a magnetoresistive effect that occurs in a magnetic tunnel junction(MTJ), which is a component consisting of two ferromagnets separated by a thin insulator. If the insulating layer is thin enough(typically a few nanometres), electrons can tunnel from one ferromagnet into the other. 7, record 2, English, - tunneling%20magnetoresistance

The intrinsic angular momentum of an elementary particle or nucleus, which exists even when the particle is at rest, as distinguished from orbital angular momentum. 3, record 3, English, - quantum%20mechanical%20spin
Record number: 3, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Elementary particles can be described in terms of a few simple properties. The most obvious of these are the mass and electric charge of the particle.... There is a... property which all particles carry, quantum mechanical spin. The name spin comes from an analogy with classical electro-magnetics. In classical electromagnetic theory, it is well known that a charged particle that is moving through a magnetic field will be deflected. If the particle... is spinning about some axis the deflection will be changed; i. e. the particle will go in a different direction than if it wasn’t spinning. The effect will depend on both the rate of spin and the rotation axis. In quantum mechanics, a similar effect is observed with any quantum particle. When passed through magnetic fields, they behave as if they are spinning electric charges. What's more, they behave as if their rates of spin are integral 0, 1, 2,... or half-integral(1/2, 3/2,...) of a base unit... much like charges come in basic multiples of the electron's charge. The concept of spin here is a bit more abstract than in the classical case. With a classical particle you can paint a little dot on the particle... and directly measure the rotation rate by counting the number of times you see the spot in a minute. This is not possible for quantum particles. They are not little spinning balls in that sense. 1, record 3, English, - quantum%20mechanical%20spin

1, record 8, Spanish, - anomal%C3%ADa%20del%20Atl%C3%A1ntico%20Sur

A relatively new optical storage technology which combines laser and magnetic methods to read and write from a platter. Information stored by local magnetization of a magnetic medium, using a focused light beam to produce local heating and consequent reduction of coercivity so that a moderately strong, poorly localized magnetic field can flip the state of a small region of high coercivity material. Reading is done either magnetically, with inductive heads in close proximity to the medium, or optically, through rotation of the plane of polarization of probing light via the Faraday effect or Kerr effect. 4, record 9, English, - magneto%2Doptical%20storage

2, record 9, French, - m%C3%A9moire%20magn%C3%A9to%2Doptique

Stationary nuclear Overhauser effect. NMR [nuclear magnetic resonance] spectroscopy based on the nuclear Overhauser effect(NOE) between dipolar coupled nuclei is one of the most commonly used techniques to determine the spatial structure of proteins. Generally speaking the NOE describes the transfer of spin polarization from one spin population to another. In the presense of an external magnetic field, the energy levels of atoms are split. This splitting is described well by the Zeeman effect if the splitting is small compared to the energy difference between the unperturbed levels, i. e., for sufficiently weak magnetic fields. This can be visualized with the help of a vector model of total angular momentum. If the magnetic field is large enough, it disrupts the coupling between the orbital and spin angular momenta, resulting in a different pattern of splitting. This effect is called the Paschen-Back effect. 1, record 15, English, - Paschen%2DBack%20effect

When these particles drift around the Earth, they do not remain on common field lines unless the geomagnetic field distribution is axially symmetric. This effect has been called "drift shell splitting"... A drift shell is uniquely determined by the coordinate pair(Bm, Lm) as a surface formed by segments of magnetic field lines between conjugate mirror points. Therefore, drift shells which are tangent to one another or cut one another at a given longitude or local time where they have a common segment of field line, generally are separate from one another at a different longitude or local time---in Roederer's terms these drift shells "split". But since these drift shells are different entities from the outset, there is no real need to infer a notion of splitting. 2, record 24, English, - shell%20splitting

The DC motor can be made to run faster than the basic "balancing speed" achieved whilst in the full parallel configuration without any resistance in circuit. This is done by "field shunting". An additional circuit is provided in the motor field to weaken the current flowing through the field. The weakening is achieved by placing a resistance in parallel with the field. This has the effect of forcing the armature to speed up to restore the balance between its magnetic filed and that being produced in the field coils. It makes the train go faster. 2, record 25, English, - field%20shunting

The laser gyro need not be mechanically dithered. The same result may be achieved by optical devices. A Faraday cell is a piece of crystal, which changes the phase of a light wave traveling through it as a function of an applied magnetic field. The effect is nonreciprocal. A light beam traveling in one direction is advanced in phase, while a light beam traveling in the other direction is retarded in phase. Reversing the magnetic field reverses the effect. 3, record 27, French, - cheminement%20al%C3%A9atoire

The technique used in the operation of a wood-fired appliance can have an effect on its efficiency in converting fuelwood into useful heat.... A flue pipe thermometer is a handy device for monitoring the performance of your appliance. Look for the type with a metal probe for insertion into the pipe rather than the magnetic kind. Locate it between 30 cm and 60 cm above the appliance flue collar. For optimum performance the flue temperature should not exceed 330 °C(600°F) or fall below 110 °C(200 °F) during normal operation. 1, record 42, English, - flue%20pipe%20thermometer
