A disruption is an instability that may develop within the tokamak plasma. Disruptions lead to the degradation or loss of the magnetic confinement of the plasma and, because of the high amount of energy contained within the plasma, the loss of confinement during a disruption can cause a significant thermal loading of in-vessel components together with high mechanical strains on the in-vessel components, the vacuum vessel and the magnet coils. 2, record 2, English, - disruption

3, record 2, French, - disruption

Record number: 3, Textual support number: 2 CONT
Using a device called a Josephson junction, a SQUID can detect a change of energy as much as 100 billion times weaker than the electromagnetic energy that moves a compass needle. A Josephson junction is made up of two superconductors, separated by an insulating layer so thin that electrons can pass through. A SQUID consists of tiny loops of superconductors employing Josephson junctions to achieve superposition : each electron moves simultaneously in both directions. Because the current is moving in two opposite directions, the electrons have the ability to perform as qubits(that theoretically could be used to enable quantum computing). SQUIDs have been used for a variety of testing purposes that demand extreme sensitivity, including engineering, medical, and geological equipment. Because they measure changes in a magnetic field with such sensitivity, they do not have to come in contact with a system that they are testing. 3, record 3, English, - superconducting%20quantum%20interference%20device

4, record 3, French, - dispositif%20supraconducteur%20%C3%A0%20interf%C3%A9rence%20quantique

Medial tibial stress syndrome(MTSS) is one of the most common leg injuries in athletes and soldiers. The incidence of MTSS is reported as being between 4% and 35% in military personnel and athletes. The name given to this condition refers to pain on the posteromedial tibial border during exercise, with pain on palpation of the tibia over a length of at least 5 cm. Histological studies fail to provide evidence that MTSS is caused by periostitis as a result of traction. It is caused by bony resorption that outpaces bone formation of the tibial cortex. Evidence for this overloaded adaptation of the cortex is found in several studies describing MTSS findings on bone scan, magnetic resonance imaging(MRI), high-resolution computed tomography(CT) scan and dual energy x-ray absorptiometry. 2, record 11, English, - medial%20tibial%20stress%20syndrome

2, record 14, French, - relaxation%20spin%2Dspin

Some electrical vehicles make use of magnetic brakes, which create opposing magnetic fields to resist motion. Called regenerative braking, this technique recaptures some of the vehicle's momentum as electrical energy. Regenerative braking uses the magnets within the electric motor itself to slow the vehicle. When the driver releases the accelerator pedal, the electric motor changes into a generator; recapturing the energy from the moving car and transforming it back into electricity. The extra electricity is then used to recharge and extend the driving range of the batteries. 2, record 16, English, - regenerative%20brake

Closely related to the telluric and particularly to the magnetotelluric methods is a technique based on the measurement of natural magnetic fields at audio and subaudio frequencies. Known as "AFMAG" (for audio-frequency magnetic fields), this technique was introduced early in 1958 by S.H. Ward. ... The basic principle of the method is to measure the tilt of the plane of polarization of the audio-frequency fields. The azimuth is first determined to the nearest 10° or so with a detecting unit. The tilt is then measured along this azimuth ... The dip angles are plotted in profile form; anomalies on the profile can be interpreted on the basis of experience gained over known conducting bodies. 5, record 17, English, - audio%20frequency%20magnetic%20technique

Polymer bonded magnets are widely being used in many automotive and non-automotive industries. Because of their many advantages such as low weight, resistance to corrosion and ease of machining the demand for bonded magnets is rising sharply.... But, the presently available bonded magnets are limited in their applications at high temperatures due to the low energy product and poor heat resistance properties. Therefore, a need exists to develop bonded magnets with higher energy product that can withstand operating temperatures of at least 180°C and higher. A key issue is the identification of suitable magnetic powders and polymer matrices, which can perform satisfactorily at the desired temperatures. 3, record 22, English, - polybonded%20magnet

Particles with high kinetic energy that are injected into the plasma transfer their energy to the plasma particles through collisions and heat them. In a neutral particle injector first the ions are produced in an ion source and then accelerated by an electric field. To allow the fast ions to penetrate into the plasma without hindrance from the magnetic field cage, first they have to be re-neutralised. The neutralised particles shoot into the plasma and transfer their energy to the plasma particles through collisions. 1, record 23, English, - neutral%20particle%20heating

1, record 23, French, - chauffage%20par%20particules%20neutres

The key feature of the tokamak is its central, hollow, donut shaped chamber. Huge electric currents pass through the coils surrounding the chamber and through the plasma inside it creating a powerful magnetic field that holds the plasma in place. The runaway neutrons have no charge and therefore not influenced by the strong magnetic field. Neutrons fly in straight paths and smash into the atoms of the reactor walls. During such collisions the considerable kinetic energy is transformed into heat energy which is used to heat steam to drive electrical generators. 1, record 24, English, - runaway%20neutron

In the presense of an external magnetic field, the energy levels of atoms are split. This splitting is described well by the Zeeman effect if the splitting is small compared to the energy difference between the unperturbed levels, i. e., for sufficiently weak magnetic fields. This can be visualized with the help of a vector model of total angular momentum. If the magnetic field is large enough, it disrupts the coupling between the orbital and spin angular momenta, resulting in a different pattern of splitting. This effect is called the Paschen-Back effect. 1, record 25, English, - Paschen%2DBack%20effect

The Earth is surrounded by a blanket of air, which we call the atmosphere. It reaches over 560 kilometers(348 miles) from the surface of the Earth, so we are only able to see what occurs fairly close to the ground.... Life on Earth is supported by the atmosphere, solar energy, and our planet's magnetic fields. The atmosphere absorbs the energy from the Sun, recycles water and other chemicals, and works with the electrical and magnetic forces to provide a moderate climate. The atmosphere also protects us from high-energy radiation and the frigid vacuum of space. The envelope of gas surrounding the Earth changes from the ground up. Four distinct layers have been identified using thermal characteristics(temperature changes), chemical composition, movement, and density [:] the troposphere..., the stratosphere..., the mesophere..., the thermosphere. The exosphere starts at the top to the thermosphere and continues until it merges with interplanetary gases, or space. A Superconducting Tunnel Junction(STJ-or Josephson junction) consists of two thin films of a superconducting metal such as niobium, tantalum or hafnium separated by a thin insulating layer. When operated at temperatures well below the superconductor's critical temperature(typically below 1 K), the equilibrium state of the junction is easily perturbed by any photon striking it. By applying a small bias voltage across the junction and a suitable parallel magnetic field to suppress the Josephson current, an electrical charge proportional to the energy of the perturbing photon can be extracted from the device. 1, record 34, English, - superconducting%20tunnel%20junction

The pulsed plasma thruster(PPT) with solid propellant is used for low power propulsion systems; typically with an average power less than thirty watts. Capacitor stored electrical energy is used to create a pulsed arc discharge across the face of a block of propellant, teflon in most implementations to date. The combination of thermal flux, particle bombardment and surface reactions ablates and ionises a small amount of the solid material... The peak discharge current is high, in the region of tens of kA. The self-induced magnetic field acts on the ions moving in the electric field creating the discharge to create a Lorentz body force that accelerates the plasma. Teflon PPTs have enjoyed limited use in east-west station keeping and sun pointing applications. PPTs do not produce sufficient thrust to be considered as candidates to provide primary propulsion of future out of Earth orbit missions and were not considered for SMART-1. 2, record 35, English, - pulsed%20plasma%20thruster

Polymer bonded magnets are widely being used in many automotive and non-automotive industries. Because of their many advantages such as low weight, resistance to corrosion and ease of machining the demand for bonded magnets is rising sharply... 1, record 42, English, - bonded%20magnet

Any of several species of subatomic particles that are identical in mass with electrons, protons, or neutrons but opposite in electrical charge or(in the case of the neutron) in magnetic moment. Thus a positron is an electron with a positive charge; an antiproton is a proton with a negative charge; an antineutron has no charge but has a magnetic moment opposite to that of a neutron. A photon has no antiparticle, since it has no particulate properties.(A photon is considered to be its own antiparticle). When an antiparticle collides with its opposite particle, both particles are annihilated and their masses are converted to photons of equivalent energy. 4, record 44, English, - antiparticle

erupting prominences. Although prominence equilibria are maintained on a long period of time, many quiescent prominences do ultimately erupt in a dramatic event lasting only a few hours. Incredibly, the eruption always occurs outwards, away from the surface, indicating that the magnetic field which originally supported the prominence has suddenly released its stored energy. This energy release is sufficient to drive the dense plasma outwards against the Sun's huge gravitational pull. After the eruption, most of the material does eventually fall back down towards the surface and the prominence will often reform again at the same location over the course of a few days. 2, record 50, English, - eruptive%20prominence

... energy storage in a magnetic field... Magnetic field can be used for energy storage. When an electromagnet is connected to a constant voltage source, the energy flow into the magnetic system varies with time. It takes energy to build this field up and that energy can be released again as an electric current in an outer circuit. 1, record 62, English, - energy%20storage%20in%20a%20magnetic%20field
