The heading indicator(HI) uses the principle of rigidity in space for it's operation. The gyro is mounted such that it registers changes around the vertical axis only; i. e. direction changes. The compass card attached to the gyro appears to the pilot as though it is turning. In reality, it and the attached gyro are remaining rigid in space, while the aircraft and case turn about the gyro. The HI is not automatically synchronized with the magnetic compass. It must be set to the compass heading while level on the airport surface prior to take-off. 13, record 2, English, - directional%20gyroscope

Record number: 2, Textual support number: 2 CONT

Angular rate gyro accuracy is characterized by two parameters: scale factor and drift. The scale factor describes the capability of the gyro to accurately sense angular velocity at different angular rates ... Gyro drift characterizes the ability of the gyro to reference all rate measurements to the nominal zero point. It appears as an additive term on the gyro output, so any actual drift away from a given or predetermined value will cause the angular errors to accumulate. 3, record 4, English, - gyro%20drift

Notice that there is no knob to set the heading of the DG [directional gyro] to match that of the compass. Why? Because it is slaved. Slaved? Back in the tailcone of the aircraft, away from all ferrous metal, is a magnetic compass. The output of this compass is electrically "enhanced" and amplified through a "flux gate"... This signal is fed to the HSI to drive the DG portion of the unit. What this means is that the reading is very accurate, not subject to the vagrancies of the regular magnetic compass, and is constantly being corrected for drift. On some aircraft, this signal is also used to slave the ADF heading card. 2, record 16, English, - corrected%20for%20drift

The HSI, or Horizontal Navigation Indicator or Pictorial Navigation Indicator, is perhaps one of the most useful although misunderstood instruments around... it combines your directional gyro and Nav indicator into one instrument that reduces pilot workload by providing heading, course reference, course deviation and glide slope information all in one visual aid... You may also consider a slaved HSI. Slaving automatically compensates for gyro heading errors and keeps your HSI in agreement with your compass. It uses a magnetic flux sensor mounted in the wing or tail of your aircraft to sense changes in magnetic heading and sends corrective signals to your HSI. 2, record 19, English, - directional%20heading

Aligning the Heading Indicator. On small aircraft like the Cessna 182RG, the pilot sets the heading indicator to coincide with the compass before takeoff and resets it periodically during flight to make sure that it remains in sync with the compass. The heading indicator drifts because it’s based on a gyro, which precesses with time. 2, record 20, English, - reset

"Set" and "reset" express the same reality except for the time aspect and are not real synonyms. However, because of the necessity to periodically and continuously "reset" the gyros, one could say that the pilot "resets" the instruments in flight as well as he "sets" or "resets" them before take-off, referring to the last in-flight setting operation. "Reset" would be more appropriate for in-flight setting operation. 4, record 20, English, - reset

Gyroscopic precession. The reaction of a gyro when a force is applied to the spinning wheel. When force is applied to a gyro, the device reacts as if the force had been applied at a point 90 degrees from the point of actual application, in the direction of rotation. Dead reckoning is a technique of computing the position of a vehicle from its distance and heading measurements. It is an inertial system which uses two independent sensors from which distance and heading information can be extracted. Because each position is relative, cumulative drift errors occur on an average of 2% of the distance traveled. The system consists of a magnetic compass or gyroscope for heading and odometer for distance. Dead reckoning is often combined with map matching to correct for drift errors. It performs well when combined with highly accurate digital maps. It can also be used to back up GPS during satellite visibility outages. 3, record 35, English, - cumulative%20drift

1, record 44, French, - gyroscope%20%C3%A0%20suspension%20dynamique
