The magnetic particle method is the most satisfactory method for finding surface and sub-surface defects.... The basic principle of the method is that while magnetic flux lines are caused to flow in a part, the local disturbance at a flaw is detected by using a magnetic powder either dry, or preferably, as a suspension in a liquid. Ferroso-ferric oxide(magnetic oxide of iron, Fe3 04 is generally preferred to powdered soft iron although even iron filings will indicate the larger faults. 1, record 15, English, - powdered%20iron

A field line is a locus that is defined by a vector field and a starting location within the field. A vector field defines a direction at all points in space; a field line may be constructed by tracing a path in the direction of the vector field. More precisely, the tangent line to the path at each point is required to be parallel to the vector field at that point. Field lines are useful for visualizing vector fields, which consist of a separate individual vector for every location in space. If the vector field describes a velocity field, then the field lines follow stream lines in the flow. Perhaps the most familiar example of a vector field described by field lines is the magnetic field, which is often depicted using field lines emanating from a magnet. 1, record 22, English, - field%20line

All magnetic objects produce invisible lines of force that extend between the poles of the object. An easy way to visualize this is to spread iron filings on a sheet of paper and place a bar magnet under the paper. The iron filings will arrange themselves around the magnet and along the magnetic field lines. In the simplest terms, Earth can be thought of as a dipole(2-pole) magnet. Magnetic field lines radiate between Earth's north and south magnetic poles just as they do between the poles of a bar magnet. Charged particles become trapped on these field lines(just as the iron filings are trapped), forming the magnetosphere. Earth's magnetic field lines are not as symmetrical as those of the bar magnet. The impact of the solar wind causes the lines facing sunward to compress, while the field lines facing away from the Sun stream back to form Earth's magnetotail. The magnetosphere extends into the vacuum of space from approximately 80 to 60, 000 kilometers(50 to 37, 280 miles) on the side toward the Sun, and trails out more than 300, 000 kilometers(186, 500 miles) away from the Sun. 4, record 33, English, - Earth%26rsquo%3Bs%20magnetic%20field

When AC is applied to a coil, a varying magnetic field will be produced around it. When another coil is placed within that magnetic field, it will induce a current flowing in that coil. This principle is called MUTUAL INDUCTANCE The amount of mutual inductance between the two coils depends on the distance between the two coils, and the angle between the two coils. When two coils are linked together via mutual inductance in this manner, we say that the coils are inductively COUPLED. When the mutually inductive coils are close to each other, we say that they are closely, or tightly coupled. When they are far apart, we say that they are loosely coupled. The greatest amount of coupling occurs when the coils are wound one directly over the other and on a closed iron core. The quantity of coupling between two coils is sometimes referred to as the Coefficient of Coupling. 2, record 36, English, - mutual%20inductance

Carbohydrate-coated magnetic beads offer many unique opportunities as solid supports for a variety of applications, including cell sorting, solid phase immunoassays, supports for immobilized enzymes, and bioaffinity absorbents. Strictly speaking the beads are not magnetic but superparamagnetic : they have no magetic "memory, and thus, after exposure to a magnetic field, can be redispersed without aggregation. They typically comprise fine grains of iron oxyde dispersed troughout the interior of monosized particles, the surface chemistry of which can be modified to provide a range of different linking methods. 1, record 44, English, - carbohydrate%2Dcoated%20magnetic%20bead
