Quantitative three-dimensional echocardiography has been developed at Columbia University in New York and validated both at Columbia and at the Danbury Hospital laboratory. Measurements made using three-dimensional echocardiography have been validated against magnetic resonance imaging, cineventriculography, and gross anatomical specimens. These validation studies have demonstrated that three-dimensional echocardiography is superior to two-dimensional echocardiography for quantitative measurements. Moreover, three-dimensional echocardiography is less expensive than other modalities as well as safe(no radioisotopes), portable, easy to perform, accurate, reproducible and acceptable to patients for repeated application.

Dans cette méthode, une zone fluide, obtenue par fusion, est maintenue en place par sa propre tension superficielle, entre deux barreaux solides, verticaux et colinéaires. Le cylindre supérieur est un solide polycristallin alors que le cylindre inférieur est un monocristal (en général du silicium) qui croit au fur et à mesure que la zone fondue recristallise, avec le déplacement vertical de la source de chauffage latéral. La convection dans la phase fluide induite par les inhomogénéités de tension superficielle (convection thermocapillaire) et par la gravité (convection thermogravitationnelle) peut entraîner des défauts dans le monocristal.

Le principe de la zone flottante en microgravité est relativement simple. Prenons par exemple un bâtonnet de beurre dont on fait fondre une des extrémités au moyen d'un briquet. Sur Terre, évidemment, le beurre se met à fondre et tombe goutte à goutte. En impesanteur cependant, le beurre fondu forme une sphère et demeure en suspension dans l'air. On appelle cette sphère une «zone flottante». Si l'on déplace le bâtonnet de beurre très lentement au-dessus de la flamme pour éventuellement le faire fondre au complet, la zone flottante initiale commence à se solidifier en s'éloignant de la source de chaleur. Bien que le beurre fondu se soit resolidifié, sa forme et ses propriétés sont différentes. Il en est de même pour les échantillons de matériaux fondus en microgravité qui, à l'étape de la resolidification, forment des cristaux plus purs et de structure plus parfaite.

Magnetoplasmadynamic(MPD) thrusters pass a large current radially outwards through a neutral plasma, from a central cathode to an annular anode. The radial current induces an azimuthal, circular magnetic field. The Lorentz body force acting on ions moving in the discharge current accelerates the plasma along the axis of the electrode structure. MPD thrusters operate at high power levels, kilowatts to megawatts, and provide high thrust with moderate specific impulse. A variant of this design uses an externally applied magnetic field to enable operation at lower power levels. MPD thrusters have been tested in the laboratory and have flown on test and demonstration missions. MPD thrusters are an insufficiently mature technology and consume too much power to be considered as candidates to provide primary propulsion of future out of Earth orbit missions and were not considered for SMART-1.

Three Materials Science Research Racks will be a major portion of the U. S. Laboratory facilities. The European Space Agency will provide the core for the Experiment Module that will occupy the right half of the rack and will house five insert modules. NASA and ESA [European Space Agency] each will provide two inserts, and the German Space Agency(DLR) will provide a fifth. Each of the five inserts will be a furnace to process materials in different ways, such as melting and freezing a sample from one end to the other(directional solidification) or quenching a sample quickly to "freeze" its condition. The German insert will be a special furnace that uses a rotating magnetic field to control flows within the molten samples. The left half of the rack will be occupied for nine months by equipment from NASA's Space Products Development Division, before it is made available to microgravity science researchers. The Experiment Modules and their inserts will be replaceable in orbit, so an entire rack will not have to be returned to Earth. There will be a single experiment module in each rack with the experiment support systems taking the left half of the rack and an Experiment Module taking the right half of the rack.

Parametric Imaging Laboratory(CNRS-University of Paris VI) have opened up a completely new path for research using the potential of quantitative ultrasound imaging. They have developed the first "ultrasound osteodensitometer" with imaging. This is the most precise technique currently available for evaluating the acoustic properties of the bone. It can be used to establish an anatomical comparison of the acoustic properties obtained by ultrasound exploration, and other fundamental properties of bone strength, such as bone mineral density or bone microarchitecture, which are obtained through x-ray imaging or microimaging using nuclear magnetic resonance.
