... hysteresis brakes produce torque strictly through a magnetic air gap without the use of magnetic particles or friction components. This method of braking provides far superior operating characteristics(smoother torque, longer life, superior repeatability, high degree of controllability, and less maintenance and down time) which make them the preferred choice for precise tension control during the processing of nearly any material, web or strand. 2, record 1, English, - hysteresis%20brake

Record number: 1, Textual support number: 1 CONT

3, record 2, French, - nanotube%20de%20carbone%20de%20type%20%C2%ABpeapod%C2%BB

A tokamak is a toroidal plasma confinement device invented in the 1950s by the Russians Tamm and Sakharov. The word "tokamak" is a contraction of the Russian words :"toroidalnaya", "kamera", and "magnitnaya", meaning "toroidal chamber-magnetic. "The plasma is confined here not by the material walls(which wouldn’t be compatible with a plasma which will be millions of degrees Celsius), but by magnetic fields. Physicists have been working since the 1950s on making better "magnetic bottles", a problem which has been compared to holding jello(the plasma) with rubber bands(the magnetic field). The magnetic fields in a tokamak are produced by a combination of currents flowing in external coils and currents flowing within the plasma itself. This contrasts to a similar concept, the stellarator, in which all of the confining magnetic fields are produced by external coils. 4, record 20, English, - JT%2D60

A relatively new optical storage technology which combines laser and magnetic methods to read and write from a platter. Information stored by local magnetization of a magnetic medium, using a focused light beam to produce local heating and consequent reduction of coercivity so that a moderately strong, poorly localized magnetic field can flip the state of a small region of high coercivity material. Reading is done either magnetically, with inductive heads in close proximity to the medium, or optically, through rotation of the plane of polarization of probing light via the Faraday effect or Kerr effect. 4, record 25, English, - magneto%2Doptical%20storage

2, record 25, French, - m%C3%A9moire%20magn%C3%A9to%2Doptique

An immobilized enzyme system is the material which results from immobilization of an enzyme onto a support matrix. Magnetic support matrices and immobilized enzyme systems offer several advantages when compared to nonmagnetic systems. For example, separation of such materials from other nonmagnetic solids by use of a magnetic field can permit separations otherwise difficult or impossible to perform. Such a situation is represented by the case where two enzymes, with different deactivation times, are used concurrently on a substrate, with one immobilized enzyme system magnetic and the other nonmagnetic. In this case, after one enzyme is exhausted, the other may be readily recovered and reused by magnetic separation of the two immobilized enzyme systems, which will be recognized as offering great benefits in economy. 1, record 34, English, - magnetic%20support

A process for reducing a magnetized material to a neutral state, that is, to a state when both the magnetic induction B and the magnetic field strength H are equal to zero.(...) The standard demagnetization process involves applying a magnetizing force above a critical value for the material used, and successively reversing H in direction as the value of H is steadily reduced to a value less than those to be used in subsequent experiments. If the final value of H is essentially zero, the specimen is demagnetized. 4, record 50, English, - demagnetization

The pulsed plasma thruster(PPT) with solid propellant is used for low power propulsion systems; typically with an average power less than thirty watts. Capacitor stored electrical energy is used to create a pulsed arc discharge across the face of a block of propellant, teflon in most implementations to date. The combination of thermal flux, particle bombardment and surface reactions ablates and ionises a small amount of the solid material... The peak discharge current is high, in the region of tens of kA. The self-induced magnetic field acts on the ions moving in the electric field creating the discharge to create a Lorentz body force that accelerates the plasma. Teflon PPTs have enjoyed limited use in east-west station keeping and sun pointing applications. PPTs do not produce sufficient thrust to be considered as candidates to provide primary propulsion of future out of Earth orbit missions and were not considered for SMART-1. 2, record 51, English, - pulsed%20plasma%20thruster

erupting prominences. Although prominence equilibria are maintained on a long period of time, many quiescent prominences do ultimately erupt in a dramatic event lasting only a few hours. Incredibly, the eruption always occurs outwards, away from the surface, indicating that the magnetic field which originally supported the prominence has suddenly released its stored energy. This energy release is sufficient to drive the dense plasma outwards against the Sun's huge gravitational pull. After the eruption, most of the material does eventually fall back down towards the surface and the prominence will often reform again at the same location over the course of a few days. 2, record 71, English, - eruptive%20prominence

3, record 73, French, - s%C3%A9parateur%20magn%C3%A9tique%20%C3%A0%20d%C3%A9viation

Magnetic Properties of Nanocrystalline Metals. Nanocrystalline materials represent one form of grain boundary engineering which increases the intercrystalline volume fraction of a material. It has been shown that this can affect mechanical, chemical, magnetic, kinetic and electrical properties. Nanomaterials produced by electrodeposition are porosity free and therefore yield their true intrinsic properties. However when assessing the intrinsic properties of nanocrystalline electrodeposits, microstructural and texture differences must be taken into consideration.(Department of Materials and Metallurgical, Engineering, Queen's University, Kingston, ON, Canada),(Department of Metallurgical Engineering, McGill University, Montreal, Que, Canada)(<a href="http ://iptsg. epfl. ch/aps/BAPSMAR96/abs/S3650003. html" title="http ://iptsg. epfl. ch/aps/BAPSMAR96/abs/S3650003. html">http ://iptsg. epfl. ch/aps/BAPSMAR96/abs/S3650003. html</a>) 1, record 75, English, - nanocrystalline%20metal

The use of fluid penetrants is particularly valuable in detecting discontinuities open to the surface, such as cracks, pores, and blowholes in nonmagnetic materials although it can be used on magnetic material if desired. The work to be tested is immersed in or coated with a fluid of low surface tension. Any surface opening or discontinuity will permit the entrance of the fluid. Magnetic sealing is used where heavy polyolefin package members are to be sealed. A gasket, shaped to fit between the sealing faces of the two package members, is made from the same thermoplastic as the package, but has milled into it an iron-containing compound that has a high hysteresis loss. The package portions are pressed together with the gasket between their sealing surfaces and placed in a magnetic field oscillating at a frequency high enough to melt the gasket. This in turn melts the sealing surfaces and causes them to weld together. As an alternative to a gasket, an iron-containing material can be preapplied to one or both of the sealing surfaces, producing the same result. 2, record 83, English, - magnetic%20sealing
