Le domaine du «carbone» a été marqué par les découvertes de deux nouveaux objets de dimensions nanométriques : celle des fullerènes en 1985, et celle des nanotubes monoparois, nano-cylindres découverts en 1993. L'observation de molécules de fullerènes dans les nanotubes en 1998 a offert aux chimistes et aux physiciens un nouvel objet d'étude «tout carbone»... Les nanostructures obtenues par l'insertion des fullerènes à l'intérieur des nanotubes sont appelées «cosses de petits pois» («peapods» en anglais) puisqu'elles ressemblent à des cosses (les nanotubes) emplies de pois (les fullerènes). Différentes variétés de [cosses de] petits pois sont obtenues selon les molécules insérées, comme le C60, qui ressemble à un ballon de football, ou le C70, ballon de rugby, par exemple.

Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute (JAERI) has been developing a continuous operation technique for nuclear fusion reactor using JT-60(JAERI Tokamak-60).

A tokamak is a toroidal plasma confinement device invented in the 1950s by the Russians Tamm and Sakharov. The word "tokamak" is a contraction of the Russian words :"toroidalnaya", "kamera", and "magnitnaya", meaning "toroidal chamber-magnetic. "The plasma is confined here not by the material walls(which wouldn’t be compatible with a plasma which will be millions of degrees Celsius), but by magnetic fields. Physicists have been working since the 1950s on making better "magnetic bottles", a problem which has been compared to holding jello(the plasma) with rubber bands(the magnetic field). The magnetic fields in a tokamak are produced by a combination of currents flowing in external coils and currents flowing within the plasma itself. This contrasts to a similar concept, the stellarator, in which all of the confining magnetic fields are produced by external coils.

Magnetic Properties of Nanocrystalline Metals. Nanocrystalline materials represent one form of grain boundary engineering which increases the intercrystalline volume fraction of a material. It has been shown that this can affect mechanical, chemical, magnetic, kinetic and electrical properties. Nanomaterials produced by electrodeposition are porosity free and therefore yield their true intrinsic properties. The use of fluid penetrants is particularly valuable in detecting discontinuities open to the surface, such as cracks, pores, and blowholes in nonmagnetic materials although it can be used on magnetic material if desired. The work to be tested is immersed in or coated with a fluid of low surface tension. Any surface opening or discontinuity will permit the entrance of the fluid. The excess fluid is removed from the surface and that which remains in the defect will then flow or creep and outline the defect.

A penetrant method of non-destructive testing used to locate defects open to the surface of nonporous materials; penetrating liquid is applied to the surface, and after 1-30 minutes excess liquid is removed, and a developer is applied to draw the penetrant out of defects, thus showing their location, shape, and size.

Magnetic sealing is used where heavy polyolefin package members are to be sealed. A gasket, shaped to fit between the sealing faces of the two package members, is made from the same thermoplastic as the package, but has milled into it an iron-containing compound that has a high hysteresis loss. The package portions are pressed together with the gasket between their sealing surfaces and placed in a magnetic field oscillating at a frequency high enough to melt the gasket. This in turn melts the sealing surfaces and causes them to weld together. As an alternative to a gasket, an iron-containing material can be preapplied to one or both of the sealing surfaces, producing the same result.
