3, record 7, French, - Canadarm

The Special Purpose Dexterous Manipulator(SPDM) is an essential tool for maintaining and servicing the Space station. With its dual-arm design providing added flexibility, the SPDM will remove and replace smaller components; on the Station exterior, where precise handling : is required. It will be equipped with lights, video equipment, a tool platform and four tool holder. The SPDM can perform dexterous tasks by sensing various forces and moments on the payload. In response, it can automatically compensate its movements to ensure the payload is manipulated smoothly. With its two arms, the SPDM will load and unload objects, use robotic tools, attach and detach covers and install various units of the Space Station. It will either be attached to the end of Canadarm2 or ride independently on the Mobile Base System [MBS] and have Canadarm2 deliver equipment to it for servicing. It also has four cameras that will provide the crew inside the Station with additional views of the work areas. Like Canadarm2 and the MBS, the Special Purpose Dexterous Manipulator will be controlled by the crew inside the International Space Station. This system will allow the crew to perform many of the tasks that would otherwise require an astronaut to perform during a demanding spacewalk. 5, record 23, English, - special%20purpose%20dexterous%20manipulator

5, record 23, French, - manipulateur%20agile%20sp%C3%A9cialis%C3%A9

The MSS [Mobile Servicing System] consists of three main elements : the Space Station Remote Manipulator System(SSRMS), known as Canadarm2, the Mobile Base System(MBS), and the Special Purpose Dexterous Manipulator(SPDM). Canadarm2 and the MBS, its platform, are essential tools for the assembly of the ISS.... The Space Station Remote Manipulator System(SSRMS), known as Canadarm2, is the first component of the Mobile Servicing System. Although similar to the Shuttle Canadarm, this 17-metre manipulator is somewhat larger and incorporates many advanced features, including the ability to self relocate. The arm has the capacity to handle large ISS modules and structural elements. It will initially be used to assemble the Station. In the future, it will capture and dock unmanned resupply spacecraft to the ISS and perform routine maintenance tasks. Canadarm2 will normally move along the Space Station on the Mobile Base System, but it also has the ability to "walk" from place to place by moving from one grapple fixture on the exterior of the structure to the next, like an inchworm.... It is equipped with four television cameras, two mounted on the booms and one near each tip. These cameras feed images to the astronauts operating the arm from the Robotic Workstation inside the Station. An advanced version of the Canadian Space Vision System improves the ability of Canadarm2 operators to keep track of the position, orientation and movement of payloads being grappled. 1, record 25, English, - Canadarm2

12, record 25, French, - Canadarm2

A part of the International Space Station that Japan is responsible for is an experiment module named "Kibo, "or "hope" in Japanese... Kibo will consist of a Pressurized Module, an Exposed Facility, an Experiment Logistics Module-Pressurized Section, an Experiment Logistics Module-Exposed Section, and a Remote Manipulator System.... The Exposed Facility is an experimental platform aimed for various tests with the instruments directly exposed to outer space. Experiments such as material tests, Earth observation, measurement of the space environment, communications tests, etc. are planned to be conducted on this facility to make use of vacuum and the weightless space environment. Being the Space Station's only laboratory in such an environment exposed to space, Japan's Kibo has already received high expectations for its performance. Among other segments of Kibo, an air lock connects between the Exposed Facility and Pressurized Module to exchange experimental instruments and materials under controlled air pressure. 6, record 31, English, - Japanese%20experiment%20module%20%2D%20exposed%20facility

Micromanipulators are devices for positioning and manipulating microminiature objects such as surgical tools, electrical probes, and fiber optics. To see and contact microminiature objects, micromanipulators must be used in conjunction with microvisualization equipment (high-magnification microscopes). In the field of microelectronics, very-high-resolution optical microscopy is combined with mechanical micromanipulators to provide systems capable of visualizing and positioning electrical probes on elements of 1 micron dimension. Optical components with resolution approaching the limits of visible light (1000X) are used with manipulators of the leadscrew, ball-joint design, and 100-thread-per-inch resolution to provide X-, Y-, and Z-axis positioning sensitivity of about 0.7 microns per degree. Micromanipulator systems may be used to perform a broad range of functions including electrical microprobing of integrated circuits (ICs). 2, record 38, English, - micromanipulator

The movement of the SRMS [Shuttle Remote Manipulator System] is controlled by the Space shuttle general-purpose computer(GPC). The hand controllers used by the astronauts tell the computer what the astronauts would like the arm to do. Built in software examines what the astronauts commanded inputs are and calculates which joints to move, what direction to move them in, how fast to move them and what angle to move to. As the computer issues the commands to each of the joints it also looks at what is happening to each joint every 80 milliseconds. Any changes inputted by the astronauts to the initial trajectory commanded are re-examined and recalculated by the GPC and updated commands are then sent out to each of the joints. 2, record 40, English, - hand%20controller

1, record 40, French, - contr%C3%B4leur%20manuel

The SRMS control system is continuously monitoring its "health" every 80 milliseconds and should a failure occur the GPC [General-Purpose Computer] will automatically apply the brakes to all joints and notify the astronaut of a failure condition. The control system also provides a continuous display of joint rates and speeds, which are displayed on monitors located on the flight deck in the orbiter. As with any control system, the GPC can be over-rided and the joints can be operated individually from the flight deck by the astronaut. 2, record 41, English, - SRMS%20control%20system

The movement of the SRMS [Shuttle Remote Manipulator System] is controlled by the space shuttles general-purpose computer(GPC). 2, record 42, English, - general%2Dpurpose%20computer

1, record 42, French, - ordinateur%20universel

An improved version of the Calibrated Synthetic Viewing(CSV) system developed at JPL [Jet Propulsion Laboratory] that used models of objects being manipulated and realtime video data to provide synthetic views of the manipulator workspace will be tested. This technology is intended to enable the conduct of manipulator operations in spite of obstructions that prevent a direct view of, for example, the interface between objects being mated. Upgraded software will be supplied by JPL and installed in the ARMSS [Automated Robotic Maintenance of Space Station] and the GCC [Ground Control Console]. An earlier version of this system was tested in FY96 [Fiscal Year]. As in the previous test, the test scenario will involve changing out a Remote Power Conditioning Module(RPCM), an ISS [International Space Station] orbital replacement unit(ORU).
