Les principaux dérivés organosiliciés industriels sont les silicones (l'une des origines de ce nom viendrait de «silicon», traduction anglaise du mot «silicium») dont la production mondiale, en constante expansion, avoisinerait annuellement le million de tonnes. Les méthylsilicones sont, de très loin, les plus abondantes.
