L'emploi de préfixes grecs est répandu pour nommer les différents parasites. Ne pas confondre avec le monoxène (un seul hôte) et l'endoxène (vivant à l'intérieur de l'hôte). Ce qui distingue l'écoparasite c'est qu'il peut vivre aux dépens d'un type d'hôte. Par exemple la puce du chien qui peut vivre sur n'importe quel chien et même éventuellement sur un chat.
