MILES MILLIONS [11 records]

Record 1 2022-01-31

English

Subject field(s)
  • Animal Behaviour
  • Marine Biology
  • Fish
CONT

Every year, millions of fish — salmon, steelhead trout, shad, alewives, and sturgeon, among others — migrate to their native habitats to reproduce. Some fish need to swim thousands of miles through oceans and rivers to reach their destination. They are often blocked from completing their journey by engineered barriers, such as dams and culverts. When fish [cannot] reach their habitat, they [cannot] reproduce and build their populations.

Subject field(s)
  • Spacecraft
DEF

A spacecraft carrying instruments intended for use in exploration of the physical properties of outer space or celestial bodies other than Earth.

CONT

Unlike an artificial satellite, which is placed in more or less permanent orbit around the Earth, a space probe is launched with enough energy to escape the gravitational field of the Earth and navigate among the planets. Radio-transmitted commands and on-board computers provide the means for midcourse corrections in the space probe's trajectory : some advanced craft have executed complex maneuvers on command from Earth when many millions of miles away in space.... A probe may be directed to orbit a planet, to soft-land instrument packages on a planetary surface, or to fly by as close as a few thousand miles from one or more planets.

OBS

[Unmanned spacecrafts] include space and planetary probes such as Pioneer, Voyager, Galileo, Ulysses, Magellan, and Mars. Lunar orbiters (such as the Lunar Geodetic Scout) and unmanned landers (e.g., Artemis).

PHR

Deep space probe.

Subject field(s)
  • Astronomy
CONT

All the stars are spheres of glowing gas; many are millions of miles in diameter. Some are 10, 000 times as thin as Earth's air at sea level, and some are so dense that a cupful of their substance would weigh tons on Earth. Star interiors have temperatures measured in millions of degrees, and at their surfaces temperatures up to 55, 000 ° F are common.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Astronomie
CONT
