Le métier de moireur est un métier ancestral. Il trouve ses origines dans l'antiquité. Le moirage consiste à dévier et écraser le grain d'un tissu selon le motif souhaité afin d'en modifier la surface qui réfléchit et diffuse la lumière. L'étoffe moirée présente donc un reflet changeant. L'aspect est chatoyant par les jeux de lumière se produisant sur la surface du tissu ce qui donne l'impression de «vagues».
