Sonar-image and hydrodynamic data were collected during an in situ bedform study at Hen and Chickens Shoal..., a bay-mouth spit associated shoal east of Cape Henlopen, Delaware, at the mouth of the Delaware Bay... The purpose of the study was to(1) image the evolution of ripples over time while recording the forcing hydrodynamic conditions, and(2) to compare the observed ripple morphology to the predicted morphology of several models.

L'étude de l'évolution morphologique des fonds sur un site expérimental d'extraction d'agrégats mixtes au large des côtes de Norfolk et à une profondeur de 25 m, a montré une érosion importante des traces de la drague en 24 mois. Les fonds avaient en certains endroits été abaissés de 2 m de profondeur par passages répétés de la drague. [...] L'observation des fonds 12 mois plus tard par caméras submersibles ne permettait plus d'identifier les sillons laissés par la drague sur les fonds marins. Natural Entrance Points : These are the points at which the coastline can most reasonably be said to turn inward to form an indentation or bay. In the history of the law of bays and its codification, this is a new term. It appears to be about as accurately expressive of the natural conditions envisioned for a juridical bays as any that can be devised. Although never appearing in the Drafts of the United Nations International Law Commission on the law of the sea, it was used in the opinion of the Court in United Kingdom v. Norway. Other and older terms which have been used are mouth of the bay, headlands, or inter fauces terrae(sometimes called inter fauces terrarum).

If tidal currents or the currents initiated by river runoff are too weak to keep the mouth of the bay open, the spit may eventually extend across the bay and tie to the mainland to completely separate the bay from the open ocean. The spit has become a bay barrier.(HAROC, 1975, p. 137).
