It was determined that a combination of the centrifugal force and the dynamic forces generated by the track geometry conditions at a speed of 65 mph was sufficient to cause the derailment. Truck hunting is wheel set oscillation caused by the dynamic response of a railway car truck when operating above certain speeds. The truck oscillates between the rails with hard flange contact occurring at regular intervals of 30 to 50 feet. Truck hunting occurs on tangent track and is more severe where the track is stiff and where CWR [continuous welded rail] is laid. It normally does not begin until around 45 to 50 mph in the case of cars with worn wheels, and 55 to 60 mph for cars with new wheels. 3, record 11, English, - truck%20hunting

... what makes some extratropical cyclones produce catastrophically damaging winds. ... [Keith Browning and Pete Clark] have identified a mesoscale flow which they call the Sting Jet. It originates in the cloud head of a rapidly deepening cyclone and gathers speed as it descends towards the tip of the cloud head when it begins to hook around the cyclone centre ... The Sting Jet was first identified observationally from a reanalysis of the Great Storm of October 1987 where the damaging winds were shown to be emanating from the evaporating tip of the hooked cloud head. It has since been reproduced in high-resolution runs with the mesoscale version of the Unified Model. The Sting Jet is distinct from the usual strong-wind region associated with the warm conveyor belt and main cold front. There are indications that conditional symmetric instability and evaporation both play a role in its formation but the importance of these processes remains to be quantified. 4, record 23, English, - sting%20jet

Sting jets occur in cyclones when there is a dramatic fall in the barometric pressure.... The sting jet is born at an altitude of three miles, within layers of ascending moist air.

On the western shores of Nova Scotia's Cape Breton Island, damaging local winds are known as Les Suetes, derived from the word for southeast : sud est. These southeasterlies are created when a frontal inversion causes a funnelling effect over the Cape Breton mountains. What are Les Suetes winds? The prevailing wind direction in Nova Scotia’s Cape Breton Highlands is westerly, but for a few weeks of the year strong southeast winds, known locally as "Les Suetes," (from the French "sud est") blow across northern Cape Breton’s open plateau and then crash down the western side of the mountains. The Cup Counter Anemometer gives direct indication of run of wind on a mechanical counter.... Munro Cup Counter Anemometer... is used at many agrometeorological stations in hot climates to indicate the run of wind at 2 m above ground level and for estimating potential evapotranspiration. The three conical cups rotate the spindle at a speed proportional to linear wind speed and the motion is transmitted, via a worm gear, to a six-digit mechanical counter which indicates in mph, knots or km/h. Average run of wind over any chosen period of time can be calculated by noting counter readings at the beginning and end of the cycle. 1, record 54, English, - cup%20counter%20anemometer

The supercell tornado is the most common and most violent type of tornado. These storms are formed from the rotating supercell thunderstorm, due to a clockwise change in wind direction with height. This changing of the wind direction with height causes horizontal tubes of spinning air to form. A thunderstorm updraft tilts the horizontally spinning tube of air into the vertical and stretches it out forming a small area of low pressure called a "Meso Low" which enhances the low level winds which ultimately leads to the formation of a tornado. Supercell tornadoes can exist for up to six hours, grow to diameters greater than a mile, and produce winds up to 300 mph. The visible funnel cloud forms because of the significant air pressure drop in the region of the meso low and tornado. The lower air pressure allows water vapor to condense into cloud droplets at a lower altitude, forming a cloud around the spinning funnel of air. In areas of the country, such as Colorado, where low level moisture may be lacking, a tornado may occur with no visible funnel cloud at all. 3, record 55, English, - supercell%20tornado

2, record 55, French, - tornade%20supercellulaire

The name comes from the Arabic word habb, meaning wind. Haboobs are most frequent from May through September, especially in June, but they have occurred in every month except November. Their average duration is three hours; they are most severe in April and May when the soil is driest. They may approach from any direction, but most commonly from the north in winter and from the south, southeast, or east in summer. The average maximum wind velocity is over 13 m s1(30 mph) and a speed of 28 m s1(62 mph) has been recorded. The sand and dust form a dense whirling wall that may be 1000 m(3000 ft) high; it is often preceded by isolated dust whirls. During these storms, enormous quantities of sand are deposited. Downbursts occur in regions of a severe thunderstorm where the air is accelerated downward by exceptionally strong evaporative cooling occurs(a dry downburst) or by very heavy rain which drags dry air down with it(a wet downburst). When the rapidly descending air strikes the ground, it spreads outward in all directions in a circle, like a fast-running faucet hitting the sink bottom. Dr. Fujita has defined downbursts as a surface wind in excess of 62 km/hr(39 mph) caused by a small-scale downdraft from the base of a convective cloud. He further subdivided downbursts into two categories macrobursts and microbursts. 3, record 66, English, - downburst

The precipitation from this cloud is very weak, and most rain evaporates before reaching the ground. But this causes one more severe feature : A dry downburst. Great damages to property and life in the Middle-East have occurred as a result of dry downbursts. The surface air under the alto-Cb is extremely hot and dry(humidity less than 10%). The rain falling from the thunderstorm under the downdraft evaporates as a result of the dry air. Evaporation causes the air to cool, which increases the speed of the downburst. Sustained winds can reach 160 km/h(100 mph) or more, for a few minutes. In Israel, the dry downbursts usually occur over the desert regions, in the south and east, when the humidity is very low. 2, record 67, English, - dry%20downburst
