  • Atomic Physics
DEF

An artificial eutactic mechanical device that relies on nanometer-scale components.

CONT

One day soon a biosensing nanodevice developed by Arizona State University researcher Wayne Frasch may eliminate long lines at airport security checkpoints and revolutionize health screenings for diseases like anthrax, cancer and antibiotic resistant Staphylococcus aureus(MRSA).

OBS

eutactic: characterized by precise molecular order.

Key term(s)
  • nano-device
  • nano device

French

Domaine(s)
  • Informatique
  • Chimie
  • Physique atomique
DEF

English

Subject field(s)
  • Microbiology and Parasitology
  • Bacterial Diseases
DEF

A bacterium, frequently living on the skin or in the nose of a healthy person, that can cause illnesses ranging from minor skin infections (such as pimples, boils, and cellulitis) and abscesses, to life-threatening diseases such as pneumonia, meningitis, endocarditis and septicemia.

OBS

Staphylococcus aureus is a Gram-positive coccus, which appears as grape-like clusters when viewed through a microscope and as large, round, golden-yellow colonies, often with ß-hemolysis, when grown on blood agar plates. The golden appearance is the etymological root of the bacteria's name : aureus means "gold" in Latin.... Today, S. aureus has become resistant to many commonly used antibiotics.... Methicillin was the first antibiotic in its class to be used(it was introduced in 1959), but only two years later, the first case of methicillin-resistant S. aureus(MRSA) was reported in England.

Record 5 2006-08-02

English

Subject field(s)
  • Microbiology and Parasitology
DEF

A strain of the bacterium staphylococcus aureus that has become resistant to methicillin.

OBS

Staph aureus became resistant to penicillin in the 1940's. Methicillin, an antibiotic related to penicillin was effective against Staph aureus and became the antibiotic of choice in treating infections. Now, 30-40% of all Staph aureus is also resistant to methicillin, thus the name Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus(MRSA).

French

Domaine(s)
  • Microbiologie et parasitologie
DEF
